Internal Rotary Work

For all you guy that have owned or know about rotaries (I would think they'd be one and the same in most cases ), what kind of internal work can be done on rotors and rotor housings to make more power?

So far, I've come up with making the intake and exhaust ports larger / different shape and either changing the contour of the rotor sides / putting in custom rotors. It's my understanding that the "breathing" on a rotary is a very finely tuned arrangement of timed pulses and such, so how easy would it be to play around with a RENESIS or any other rotary without actually hurting performance? Also, am I correct in believing that changing the contour of the rotors would have an impact on performace? Of course it would affect the compression but how about the shape?

What else can you guys come up with?

If you can't tell, I'm really looking for an angle to "get my hands dirty" with my upcoming RX-8.

well, early early early early early reporrts on the RENESIS had it interallly lined with all kinds of weird stuff that i can't remember or identify, but one thing i do remember was the ceramic stuff that was suppost to be around the ports. i still dont' know (or know if anyone else would know... T-Man?) if this is true, but if it were, would mean that there would be some pretty hefty trade-offs as far as porting goes.

in respect to porting, the same old tricks still apply: the bridge, the street port, "clipping" the edge of the rotor on the leading side to advance timing (but on this RENESIS, it would advance not only the intake, but the exhaust too, ) and create some more overlap...

but porting a lot won't help tons and tons unless you're going to up the rpm (ohhh yeah :D), which is the real secret to making more power in any application. stronger outer gears (the ones that are, yes, inside the rotors) are a must (although the RENESIS ones are already pretty damned fine to run +9k) along with a stiffened (i have no idea how... unless there are just plain better alloys out there, with only $$ as a hurdle) e-shaft, and lighter rotors always help (and could mean that you wouldn't need to replace the first two things, but the RENESIS rotors are already as light (or lighter??) than the motorsports rotors Mazda made 15 years ago for the 13B)...
if you're of the daring sort (which i'm not), and there are FPROMs (or whatever the hell they're called, those fancy aftermarket ECUs) that will let you bump up the rev limiter to 10.5k, with some light porting and a high-rpm header (and maybe some alterations to the intake system), you could probably hit the 280 mark (280*5252/10000= 147lb/ft... very attainable), or even higher.

i remember reading on either this forum or nopistons.com or rx7club.com that
someone went to a race event and some drive/ engineer ( dont remember word for wrd) said that mazda is planning on racing the rx8's and is getting 300hp from jus porting...and some other small ****... well...A. i hope they do go racing B. thats crazy from news C. a turbo set up would be nice and give us some crazy torque gains...

...like i said, with enough revs (and ports to match, of course) you can make as much horsepower as you like.

P-Port motors can easily make 300 hp at +9k, but are probably illegal (uncompetitive when you have a motor which weighs less than a 4cylinder, making more than 60hp over the best race-spec 4bangers around)

how about we stick to the turbo setups which seem to work great for the most part... with porting too 300hp ...ur idle will be so high ill be silly to drive it around town or in traffic...if i remember right one guy had p-ports done and idle'd at 1700
which is a lot! from the usual 850-900

i know that p-ports aren't streetable or emissions-passable, i'm just saying that you can certainly make more than 300 hp with porting alone (as in the race cars).
