Inner tie rod failure

Yesterday when installing front new tires, found that the passenger side inner tie rod had about 1/4 of play in/out, the strange thing is that even with that huge amount of looseness there was not even the slightest sensation of wheel shimmy or steering wooble. Will like to know if any had the same problem, or if the inner tie rod is replaceable ( the service manual does not have a section about the removal of the inner ones), the 8 is a 04 model with 38k miles so far w/o any problem, a great car!
