How to lock car while warming up?

I was wondering, since it's cold now, how do you lock the car from outside while the car is warming up? I have a GT '06. I tried to leave 1 key inside, while I tried to lock the car with the spare key outside, it didn't work. I have auto-locks enabled on the car, could that be the reason?

Get in, start car, lock door, sit there cold and wait! I'm just messing with you. Someone will chime in here with a real answer soon. I only have RX-7's.

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-valet-561t-remote-start-install-107805/ Try searching for remote starters. You still need to hide a key in the car for most to work.

if you've got a manual, the remote start might be a tricky (illegal in some states)

LOL, I thought you were seriously for a second there! Ok, I'll sit tight and keep warm.

Does that mean there's no other way besides getting a remote starter? I'm okay with going out for a second to start it up. I just want the heater to warm up.

Yea, I don't want my car flying through the house anyways.

Isn't leaving an unattended car running illegal in most places?

There was a piece on the local news about how the police in one of the jusridictions around here (DC and burbs) were going around nailing people with remote starters.

Generally best to warm a car by driving it. Maybe wait long enough to come off high idle, but letting it idle until the water temp comes up doesn't do it any good.

Im not the kind of ppl who will just get in and drive off. I usually just gonna start my car and wait for a minute or 2 before I drive it off (extreme cold days I might wait 3-4 mins, but nothing more)

Cuz its bad to drive without warm ups. Piston or Rotary. Its a good idea to wait for the oil to lube the parts before giving them any serious stress.

I've seen ppl who just sit there with the car idling 15 minutes b4 driving off, thats just stupid, not only does the person gave the car wear that it does not need, it also kills the enviorment by just wasting energy for doing nothing.

Since I live in a subdivision and have a long driveway with a gate across it, I have no problem whatsoever with starting the car and letting it run unattended and unlocked while warming up. I'm usually right inside the door in plain sight of it a few feet away anyways. It's highly unlikely someone will be there to take it and if they are, they'd probably have just been daring enough to come up to me if I was in it anyways.

I never tried this on our cars but other vehicles with keyless entry and start you just take the actual key out and lock it with the key while leaving the other part of the remote inside.

I keep my other key (not remote) handy at all times. I'll have the set with the key/remote in the ignition, step out, and use the other key to lock my door. I'm ridiculously paranoid about theft and such, so I used this liberally...

Are we anywhere closer to getting an answer to this? I'd love to know too... are you talking about the advanced key? I have one and when I get out the car beeps and beeps as if to remind me not to leave it alone..
I've tried everything to lock it and it wont.. it just beeps at me. I havent tried leaving the transmitter inside and removing the manual key to use to lock the door.. but I was afraid I wouldnt be able to get back in again (duh.. maybe should try with the spare transmitter around?)

Anyway, I'd love to know too!

Basically, the car is "idiot-proofed" to keep you from inadvertently locking yourself out. Manually locking the car either by hitting the swtiches inside, or using the key outisde, ensure you won't be locked out. Just pop your extra ignition key off the chain, keep it in your other pocket or something, and use that in the door when you get out.

When you warm your car up in STL beware of cops slapping a ticket on the windshield rather than it getting jacked! There was a piece on the news with a chief of police sitting in his big bad chair counting the tickets that were wrote earlier today.
Sort of made me laugh.

Thank you guys for the answer. Didn't think about the valet key. I feel so dumb now.

I'm in the middle of a dense neighbor, so as far as cops checking out the neighborhood is unlikely. Plus, I don't let it warm up that long, usually less than 5 mins. I just warm it enough so that I can turn on the heat when I get in. It's hard to sit in the cold for a couple mins until there's heat coming out. I usually drive off when it's cool outside, but when it's really cold, like less than 20 degrees, I would like to warm it up and have a little peace of mind that it won't be stolen. Thanks again!

Call a dealer and tell them you want the autolock enable. Make sure they understand what you mean (to automatically lock after a few seconds of leaving the car) because the mechanic or service rep at the dealer didn't understand completly and had to try again to make it work. Make sure they don't charge anything for it, otherwise go to another dealer.
