Help Me Install A Coil

I know that there is a DIY thread about installing a coil, but i don't know much about things like that. I had my uncles mechanic look at the coils, and he said he is afraid to mess with it, so i am wanting to just do it myself, but i need some help. I know where the coils are, and i just am replacing #2. Can someone please give me a step by step that is easy to understand? I would appreciate the help. Thanks

Aaron

I've always heard you should replace them all at once.

I would do them all at once. If one went bad you'd think the others arent far behind.

Disconnect negative battery terminal. Take the intake off. Take the spark plug wire off the coil, take the harness connector off the coil. Unbolt coil from the mounting plate. Replace with new coil and install in reverse order.

Once the car is back together, turn the car on. DSC/TCS lights will light up. Turn steering wheel all the way left then right to get the TCS light off. When you turn the car off and start it again the DSC light will be off. This happens anytime that you disconnect the battery.

Procedure to reset DSC is also in your owners manual but it is basically what I said above

You have to take the whole intake off just to replace the coil?

^^Yes. You can see that the intake is clearly in your way. lol

I'm doing it once I get my coils and wires next week. Taking the intake off might be a bit tricky ...after that I assume it will be smooth sailing...

Do we really need to disconnect the battery??

One of the instructions I was looking at earlier does not say anything about unhooking the battery...

replace it all at once. dont waste your time doing it again in the future.

Not like they're expensive anyway, your uncle's shop tech is afraid to touch it? the hell. I say he is not so experienced then, Tell your uncle to fired him.

For your question. you will need a 10 mm socket, an extension bar about 6 inches, a ratchet and a flat headed screw driver.

use the 10 mm socket with the ratchet to take the battery terminal off, then take the screw driver and unbolt the intake tube, u will notice that the intake tube is soft plastic. after its all unbolt, pull the whole intake box out with your hand. then u have clear access to the coils.

Now u take the 10mm socket, put it on the extension bar with the ratchet, take the Coil wires off, remember their order, u can get a little tape with names on them like 1-2-3-4. same thing for the connectors to the coil. then u can unbolt them all with the 10mm socket u have on ur hand.

after u replace it all, put them back the way it was. fire the car up, u see dsc light flashing, turn the steering wheel all the way to left then right, or right to left, whatever u want. turn the car off, turn it back off and let it idle for around 5-10 minutes. then turn it off, let it sit for around 30 minutes, then just go drive it around(idle might not be stable, it might even stall, u need to complete 3 drive cycle to get better idle)

How long should the whole process take, with someone who knows what they are doing?

someone knows what they're doing + fast hand = about 30 minutes for everything, most 1 Hour if you take the label cable path.

I do everything in about 30 minutes. Cuz I know which wire goes to which. I've been looking at it so many times I can do the swap with my eyes closed I think. LOL

lol ok well my uncle has 2 mechanics, and im gonna have the other one do it tomorrow morning, so hopefully it won't be too rough on him. i appreciate all of your help. I hope this fixes my problem, the computer said ignition 2 misfire, so i was told that is either the coil or the spark plugs, and i bought both so hopefully after that, my car will run normal lol

I was able to replace all four of my coils without removing the intake. I did have to use 14" of extensions with my 1/4 ratchet, and my arms are admittedly lanky which certainly helped. If you do it like this make sure you have a telescoping magnetic tool pickup so that you can retrieve the small nut if you drop it.

If I had to do it all over again I might just remove the intake; but if you're doing just one I'd say you don't have to remove a thing.

What is the trick to removing the plastic wire connector to the coil? Doesn't it have kind of locking clip?

Thanks

That would work too, but it takes like 5 minutes to remove the stock airbox so I dont really see the point of "NOT" removing it during the process

Nothing, remove it with your hands. the coil clips are not as hard to take off than the Alternator or the ESS one.
