Thumbs up Help me identify this diff cover

Hey guys -

Bought an RX-8 diff to pull the ring and pinion for my RX-7. Just arrived today, hopefully I'll be able to tear into it soon.

From what I understand, this diff was from an 04-08 manual trans RX-8. But, the diff cover has this weird aluminum kick-out, like a heat sink. Every other RX-8 diff I've seen (and RX-7 diffs) don't have this.

Marking the input flange and ring gear, turning the input flange, and counting rotations I get just shy of four and a half input rotations to one ring rotation, so it seems this is a 4.44 gear.

Can anyone tell me why this is different? I'm also hoping this cover will work on the FD diff .

Thanks!

Dale

It does seem to be a stock part and not an aftermarket cover. Also, the ring gear in the diff appears to be an 8" ring gear if that helps any.

So, possible it's from a Series 2 RX-8?

Any more input is greatly appreciated! If you need any more info or pics I'll be happy to oblige.

Thanks!

thats an s2 cover. I think. It sure looks like one. that would make the gears a 4:7

Were there other ratios on the S2 diffs? As stated, the ratio doesn't seem to be a 4.7.

Really wish there was a part number stamped on it!

Just answered my own question -

http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...ehicleCode=RX8

The S2 RX-8 (at least the 2011) has a 4.77 on the manuals, 4.3 on the automatics.

Do all S2 RX-8's have this new style cover? If so, that cover might be a cool upgrade for the S1 cars.

the other answer is the RX8 R&P is interchangeable with the FD3, so is the cover, the actual housing is slightly different though

Dan, it's about $500 plus shipping from Japan

Don't want it that bad

I did some TIG welding on mine and added a fill plug and temp sensor probe...

Seems to work well.....will have to wait for a track day to see if I can keep my diff temps down.

Here's a pic of the diff itself. It looks really simple, I'm thinking it's an open diff.

Just looks like some small gears and springs inside.

So the consensus is the diff cover means it's from an S2?
