Help: How to setup RX8 for Drifting?

Hi guys,

Am planning to do slight mod to a RX8 for drifting. I was thinking of getting a coilover, 2 way LSD and some stiffening bars. Are these mods enough for me to do drifting in RX8?

Was told that RX8 is very hard to drift because of the low torque and the drive-by-wire throttle.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

U need alot of money, cuz drifiting the car would put alot of stress on the component. So looking forward to replace them every so often.

drifting the car with some degree of ease usually requires a change in the LSD setup and suspension modifcations. In addition, you need to address cooling bigtime as the car is going to be revving high and hard without alot of airflow. I would consider a radiator upgrade, better oil cooler ducting and all synthetic fluids.

More power can certainly help, but if you go out and see the guys with the stock 240sx's, many drift just fine on stock non turbo engines.

Depends on your skill level. If you are just starting out, all you need are lots of tires and seat time. If you have been drifting for a while, coilovers, sway bars and a good alignment should be enough.

Not exactly "car setup" but .... if they would let you (generally AWD only is a requirement to participate which DQ's the Rx8), a couple of sessions or days with something like www.gruppe-q.com would give you all of the drifting basics, with none of the drive train wear and tear. No overheating worries, no tire wear, not LSD problems. Your biggest risk is body damage from snow banks http://www.gruppe-q.com/

RX-8 doesn't have an E-brake, that kind of makes it abit harder to drift.

For drifting practice, I have met guys who just go out to flat parking lots with cones in light rain. Given how poor my traction is on the stock rubber in the 8 in the rain, I should think that would be pretty fun while not putting too much of a beating on the car. By the time you are ready to do faster/dry weather drifting, you'll likely know what the car needs.

ha - have to admit I don't know much about it but just seems logical to me that a low torque car is not going to make the best drift car . Think abbid's idea is better

1) turn traction control off
2) select 2nd gear
3) crank the wheel
4) mash the gas

While the 240sx is light

ranging from 2680 to 2860 curb weight
it makes 140 to 155 hp and 152 to 160 ft-lbs Torque

while the 8

is 3045 curb weight
and makes 232 hp and 159 ft-lbs Torque

I simply don't see 200 lbs heavier at the high end making one unable to drift. It really seems to be a practice thing as opposed to a car thing.

Practice first (someplace safe) then modify if you feel you want too.

what makes the tail end of a car fish out more, a stiffer front sway bar or a stiffer rear sway bar?? didn't teamrx8 have the rear end tailing out and blamed it on a too stiff front sway??

All you really need to drift is practice. As u start drifting, you'll figure out what u need. Coilovers, and strut bars help alot. But power is not as important... it helps, but it not as important til u get better at drifting. You can initiate some of your drifts by creating a wieght tranfer with your car. PM me if you ya got question. I have alot more tips!
