Hard Start & Sluggish

Hi there

I have a 04 MT with approx 50K km on it. Same original plugs, coils wires etc.

I did have a flooded engine back in march of 2008 (stalled car reversing right after starting it up) and had the plugs dried out, engine drained etc at dealership. No issues after that.

Lately, it seems that my start is harder than before, it takes a few seconds to start instead of nearly right away.

Also, in 1st at a light/hill etc, if I stomp the gas, it seems to not have the same power it had. Seems sluggish until I hit higher RPMS Once I get going, response/throttle seems the same.

Could this be needing new plugs/coils? Any feedback would be great.

Yea try that, if that doesn't help then try cleaning your MAF sensor, and if that doesn't help then you may be in need of a compression test. Do you lose power at high rpms?

First do the basic maintance stuff like change the ignition coils and spark plugs. If the problem is still there take the car to the dealer. You may be a new cat converter or engine.

forgive my lack of knowledge.. when you check the plugs and coils, what are you looking for specifically?

The spark plugs can show signs of fouling (covered in soot and black stuff) or running lean (covered in a chalky white residue). If you have the plugs out, then most likely you'll be replacing them with new ones anyways.

The coils need to be inspected using a multi-meter to check for a few readings. The "burn spots" that many experience on the coils themselves aren't really a good indication to see if the coils are operating within the efficiency range.
