Greddy Exhaust Tarnished How Do I Clean?

The Exhaust is severly tarnished especially on the driver side tip, it did seem to be a goldish color and now its just a dark brown, not very pleasant at all. I have tried chrome polish, scrubbing, etc. . . and nothing works. My friend use to work for a guy who details cars and has an "acid" that they used to clean certain things. I am not for sure what this would even be so I am kind of scared to use it, but anyway, does anyone know a way that I could get clean this off and what may be causing it.

When I first started noticing it I thought it may have been the Petroleum Jelly that I used to get the hangers to go in, but then it started to get worse.

Please Help!

how long were you rubbing in metal polish. no matter the type of polish, you have to continuously and vigorously work the polish in. i did it to rotary rasps tips, which were racing beat tips that turned gold, took over 5 minutes for one tip alone, but it came out looking shiny.

Hmm.. I don't think it's the polish being worked in... I think it's the metal being scoured off by the polish till all the tainted metal has been removed.

Anyway, remove enough metal, and it'll be shiny again.

Blue Job chrome polish works, but its really pricey and the blue/gold color will return. Some people actually desire the heat tarnished color.
