I wonder if the Bolt Head on the RX-8 cooler can be removed and can do the same drain from there?

Mazda don't list the separate parts like the FC oil cooler for the 8.

Subject is the OIL Cooler Thermostat, here is the one shown for the FC RX-7, not sure if there is a removable one for the RX-8 yet, as there is no parts listing.

Well to be honest, I really do not know.

RG does it on his FC RX-7, however, even though there is a bolt head shown on the RX-8 oil cooler, I don't know if this will freely undo, and if you can drain the oil OK, perhaps you could be the first to try?

You would have to remove (your "Vent" "modified"..I hope) inner guard splash shield to get to it.

Thanks for posting that information. I'll be sure to check it out as the thermostat might either need replacing or just being cleaned up.

 

Having installed a new oil cooler on my RX-8, I don't remember seeing anything on there that would easily allow draining of the cooler. The in and out bolts need to be oriented and are a bitch to put on anyway. I think we're a bit out of luck in that regard.

An Oil Filter Magnet is also a MUST for the Series I RX-8's (as they have no factory fitted sump magnet) to assist capture of fine metal particles in your engine oil.

 

I'll post this oil informtion link here for anyone interested. There was so much conjecture and opinion in the "Official Synthetic Oil for the RX-8" thread about Idemitsu's product, I figured the simply way to get to the bottom of it was (!) to ask them....

After submitting a list of questions, I received a reply w/specific answers from Idemitsu and permission to publish on the forum. The answers provide more information we've never had before about their synthetic rotary engine oils.

I just changed my oil for the first time in the new engine (1500 miles) and it was jet black. I got about 4.5 quarts out and refilled with Castrol Syntec (German) 0W30. I have some white smoke at cold start-up and once I use this TW3C synthetic 2 Stroke up I'll be switching to Idemitsu. My exhaust tips get pretty sooted but I don't have a cat so..... we will see if I can eliminate the black soot on the tail pipe. Not sure if its the no cat, the premix, or the oil that was causing the soot.

 

TWC3 premix is not very CAT friendly. but u dont have cat so I dont think thats a problem ...

my car never smokes with Idemitsu tho
