Gasoline f*#%k up!
the only time I ever got +22mpg was going 70-75mph on US freeways like paulmasoner (I had 91 in the tank)
My car sounded like the coils are shot when I put 87 in during the summer.
all in all, wankels will run on anything, depends what your tune is.
my snowmobile ran the best on leaded 85, after I converted it it pretty much only runs on 91 with heavy premix.
I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out and see how your car runs at different levels of octane, I thought my car ran better with 93, until I put 91 in it for a month straight.
