I've been meaning to throw this out there, so if you don't mind I'll piggyback on your post.

I was at my local ag. supply when I saw Stihl HD synthetic Jaso FD certified oil.

Does anyone think this would be an acceptable substitute?

 

i would stick with premix oil made for the rotary. idmitsu but do what you want. the oils you guys are suggesting are for chainsaws and weedwackers but its your car

I'm going to join the pre-mix group.. I have been doing it for five years with my Powerstroke and after 5k on a new engine...
I use Redline 2-Stroke Racing oil. What do you guys use to get the oil in the tank without spilling?

I use Amsoil Interceptor, local supplier deals it and it works great. No shipping and its sold in different amounts

I use one of these... I mix the premix with some gas, comes out easier, and it doesn't leave much behind.

 

That will be ok. I use Lucas Synthetic. Come in 2.6oz bottles at most autopart stores. Rotary specific oil is a waste of money. Hell I have ran an RX-7 only using MMO as a premix with the omp disabled and it ran for thousands of miles like that. No issues.

 

I wouldn't run lucas or MMO as premix... Upper cylinder lubes are not the way to go, you need a 2 cycle oil that is meant to lubricate and combust at high operating temperatures. You can use stuff designed for lawn equipment, you just need to be sure it is Jaso FC or FD approved. That is the best kind of premix you can get, Idemitsu is Jaso FC equivalent but doesn't have the approved rating.

What you want to put: idemitsu (afterall it's designed as rotary premix), any 2 cycle oil that meets or exceeds Jaso FC, FD, & ISO L-EGD.

More than likely that oil you have pictured is TCW-3 oil, which does a shitty job as premix for a rotary engine.

 

I use Lucas 2 stroke, not UCL. As far as MMO my non turbo FC that ran that way for almost 10k miles and dyno'd almost 30whp more than stock(with a few mods) would disagree with you.

It still doesn't change the fact that these are the oils you should be using.

 

Idemitzu ... 8-10 oz per tank depending on how I feel at the pump. I may run Amsoil one day, but I really like using an oil that has "Rotary" written on it

I would think the synthetic Stihl Jaso FD I mentioned earlier would be OK, but there is so much disagreement on this topic that it's hard to decide.

Idemitsu seems to be leader of the pack, but seems there is no concrete right or wrong.
Some say premix isn't even necessary.
Definitely controversial.

I think it's the convenience factor that would lead me to use Stihl synthetic.
They make quality equipment and the Jaso FD cert. seems to back that up.

I'm probably rationalizing though.

 

There is a general consensus that one should stick to Idemitsu, and the 2 stroke oils that meet the ratings.

And that you should stay away from TCW-3... Leave that stuff is your jetski. It shouldn't do harm, but it just sucks as a lubricant.

I totally feel you, I use a echo jaso FD 2 stroke oil. It's pretty pricey almost $9, but I get them through my landscaping company. I've also used idemitsu in the past...

People don't really understand how important these ratings are, look it up if you're interested. To get an oil approved as Jaso FD the proposed oil has to go through various extreme tests and pass them in order to be rated as such.

I haven't seen anything about this in the threads I've been searching, but on Mazdatrix's webpage the description for Idemitsu warns not to use with Ethanol based fuels. As non-Ethanol based fuels are hard to come by and they don't specify why not to use it with these fuels, I am a little dubious about using this product, although it seems to be the best option because of its specificity for rotary motors. Just wondering if anyone had any input on the matter.

 

ethanol and two stroke oil do not mix well, and often create "sludge". That being said, the amount of ethanol in 87-93 octane fuel in the US is not enough to create an issue. The warning is moreso for those who plan on running e85 or another high mixture of E.
