the best gas mileage enhancer for the rx-8 is the Cobb AccessPort. One reason the rx-8 has such crap gas mileage is because it runs so damn rich, this also leads to carbon build up and blown motors. The Cobb AP retunes the stock PCM to run proper AFRs which will save you gas and you'll gain a good bit of power. I think it's in the neighborhood of a 5-10hp increase depending on how bad (rich) your car is running currently.
It's $695, which is what you'll spend on a exhaust system that will give you less horsepower... and it will help pay for itself due to fuel mileage increase and you don't have to worry about underdriving your accessories. If you ever want to go turbo, or even supercharged.... , you're ready to go too.

not so much.. with the mpg stuff.. yep he could lean it out. an maybe get .5 mpg out of it on cruise.. so it would never pay for itself on that angle..
the reason for the crap mpg is people drive this car in the city. wait that might lead to carbon build up... repeat the cycle.
the car runs rich at full throttle so maybe some saving at track days? not really the problem.
now with the tune will make more power on track days!!! and the rest of the time..
and if you are going fi in the future, well brilliant..

i bet youd save more gas with a CobbAP than a vortexacone intake disrupter though
There were some people on the Cobb discussion thread that were reporting better fuel mileage. I think someone said 15-20%

Do not count on premix getting significant better mileage on a good engine. Some reported better mileage for a tank or two but then it goes down again. Some think it helps an engine with low compression. On my low mileage engine I have seen no increase in mpg.
