FYI, I was bored so I ripped apart a couple of old but never used 30GB SCSI drives and the magnets were twice as thick and twice as strong as the ones I pulled from a 80Gb Seagate IDE drive. We were actually having a contest to see who could push the opposite ends together. It was extremely hard, a couple of the pussies here at work couldn't do it, haha. I slapped the two from the IDE drives on the oil pan near the drain plug.

If the magnets weren't so huge at the powder metal plant I worked at I'd slap that to the oil pan, but then it's the size of my computer and can lift about 30lbs so I don't know if that would have an effect on anything else.

Yeah I put two by the oil pan drain plug. But if you put them on the pan, you cannot remove them or you will have a chunk of metal shavings floating around in your pan. At least if they are near the drain plug they should flow out with the oil (I hope).

I duct taped a couple of hard drive magnets to my oil filter. The only thing I would like to do different is to the magnets themselves. They are glued (epoxy ?) to a metal bracket and I would like to separate them for a more convenient installation. If someone knows an easy way to do that, could you post it.
They're fairly brittle and will rust if the chrome is removed. However, I've found two ways that are successful at removing the magnets from the backer plates without breaking into 2-3 pieces 50% of the time.
First, put the magnet on a vice. Open the vise up so that only tips of backing plate rests on them. Make sure the magnet is facing down. Tap firmly with a hammer. Ball head or similar shape to put the force squarely in the middle of the backing plate.
Second, get a chisel. Use a vise to hold the magnet by the backing plate so that it sits vertical with the magnet facing one of the gripping faces of the vise but not actually being gripped by the vise (only the backing plate should be held by the vise). Put the chisel tip at the junction between the magnet and backing plate. Tap gently with a hammer.

As I said before there is No magnetic anything associated with the Series I RX-8 Engine oil.
No Magnetic Sump Drain Plug and NO magnet inside the sump.
Yes you can buy an aftermarket Sump Drain plug with a magnet, but the "catch" area is very small.
With Strong Magnet (s) on your steel OIL Filter case you can remove the "particle collection" when you change your oil filter.
The only Factory Drain Plug Magnets are on your Differential and Manual Gearbox plugs.

I just wanted to inform ALL RX-8 owners that IMO this is a critical MOD or ADD on which will help to save your engine and keep your engine OIL from circulating minute metal particles around your engine below 25 microns...your Oil Filter CAN NOT Catch these.
Considering the Series I RX-8's 04-08 have NO factory installed Sump Magnet like the FC RX-7, and Mazda have re-introduced this same sump magnet in the 09 RX-8's....I would ask...WHY????
IT IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY TO HELP YOUR RENNY'S ENGINE...

kinda been thinking about it but it is expensive at superautobacs... and novv its closed dovvn...
it seems anything to keep oil clean in a rotary is pretty vital as vve inject oil from our crankcase... i personally don't see y not?
the minute job it ACTUALLY does may not be significant... but it sure can make a easier path for the oil metering nozzles!

If oil goes in the outer holes of the oil filter and out of the inner hole, then the magnets are pulling metal from the oil before it goes through the paper filter. So how much much of what is seen in the opened filters would have been caught in the filter anyway? I am guess most of it. This is the long way of me questioning how much this mod is really doing.
Of course i bought one anyway. Anything for my 8!

Generally an oil filter paper will not catch anything below 25 microns, so the magnet(s) are catching CRAP below this size, naturally it will only catch/attract metals that is near or in the vicinity of the magnets, so if oil is circulating around the other side of filter case???...well, leave that to the imagination....catch it next time around??
In some way it is helping to keep filter paper cleaner I guess because it is trapping CRAP before it is filtered.
I know when I took my oil filter apart after only 1000 miles (memory) the CRAP was like a ultra fine black paste.
So it has to help in keeping your oil cleaner for longer??
Put it this way, I would rather have it on than not at all..

Just reading it - sweet. i had read reference to the S2 magnet, and just jumped a bit to fast when i found this. I'll probably try the hard drive mod first since I have one sitting downstairs.
