Engine Rebuild

To start out, I bought a 2008 40th anniversary edition on the 12th. It had a salvage title due to water damage and the engine was seized up. I knew all the potential problems going into the purchase and saw it as a great learning experience. My dad is helping me do the rebuild and in the end not only do I get a great car, but I will know almost everything about it. I immediately took out all the interior to let it fully dry. All the electric works and the connections look good. There was minimal damage to the interior. We finally got the engine apart tonight after running into a few problems. The engine was seized due to an apex seal breaking and wedging between the rotor and housing.

I have been reading the forum for a few months now and thought I'd include you guys in my rebuild experience. I would appreciate any advice or constructive criticisms. I haven't cleaned any of the parts yet that is next weekends task. With that in mind I do have a question. Do you guys recommend removing the internals of the rotor to clean it? The rear pate was cracked so if you have any recommendations on where to get one that would be very helpful.

Oh, all that rust and a cracked iron. Getting the rust out of the inside of the E shaft will be a chore. It's hard to tell without more detailed pics but you definitely will have some money in this rebuild. My advice is to just buy a reman and put it in.

Getting another engine is the only way to solve that mess.

Those pics do make it look worse than what it is. The e shaft looks good and the rust mostly wiped off the housing.

You're looking at 2 housings, 1 but probably 3 irons, 2 rotors, all the gears (assumption) on top of the seal rebuild kit. More than 4k in parts alone.
A remanufacturer engine from Mazmart will cost you less than that and is built buy somebody who's not an idiot.

Good luck with the rest of the car if the engine is in those conditions.
