I'm not sure of the grommet, but I'm guessing that's one of those things that would keep the motor from spinning freely. I don't know enough about the assembly to know that level of detail. I do know that applying a voltage to a DC motor that won't spin freely will result in its demise unless it's protected from such a situation (which is not hard to do).

Also, I wholeheartedly agree that saving a few dollars using a brushed DC motor where a brushless motor would add reliability to a very expensive component is not good economy. All of us would've paid 100 dollars to be virtually guarnteed this critical item rarely if ever fails. A brushless DC motor with controlling electronics doesn't cost much more. Plus they could've added output diagnostic information to the PCM that would warn you in the event a failure occurred.

Hey, no problem fella. I'm pretty ignorant about these rotaries so I'm learning from you all. It's good to know I can add a little of my knowledge for you that have tons more experience with these cars. On spinning the motor to check it's condition....not a bad idea, but it doesn't cover winding condition, only the mechanical/friction producing side of the system. I don't know this, but if there is a clutching mechanism that's engaged on power application (i doubt that also), it may not indicate anything.

BTW, where the hell is the camshaft in this thing?????

(ok, that was a joke, lol).

Given that we now know about the design of the cooling fan motors, I would be leery of modifications which seek to extend the duty cycle of the fans.

Fan is replaced. What a PITA. As this thread fades into the unknown i just want people to be aware that the fans can and do go out. If you have hot air in the cabin all the time, a/c isn't cold, don't hear the fans, or you boil over... CHECK YOUR FAN FUSE. Hopefully a search will turn this up.
