Honestly, for that many miles, I think that price is a bit high. Not sure though.
I saw one with 8000 miles in the paper today. 2005, 8000 miles, under 20k.
I'd spend the extra 5 and have a car almost new...or I'd run to the dealership and get an 08 for 24000, there is a 3,000 dollar rebate on them now.

What is the point of having an awesome car when you can't go anywhere fun in it because you're barely staying afloat just to own it?

Any used car price, esp at a dealership, is totally negotiable. I'm not sure a youngster is equipped to go up against one of these "crafty" used car salesman. Having said that, I agree, getting 2k off that car should be pretty easy.
I'd also have any engine approaching 60k miles certified by having a compression test done (minimally) before touching it. Owners may be getting out from under one of these because of the "known" engine problems and they're out of warranty at 60k miles.
Having said all that, wouldn't a mazda3 interest you. Much more practical car for a young fella on a limited budget. They handle well, they get good mileage, they perform decently and they are reliable.
An RX8 is a great car, so long as you can afford to keep it up. And they are not cheap in that regard.

Used RX8's are not flying off the lot so, if they move one and make at least a little on it, they will give you a good deal. Unless, of course, they put too much money into the car to begin with. To get an idea of what they probably have into it. Go to www.kbb.com and see what trade in is. Then subtract about $1,000 from that. Most dealers have a pac of about $800 and, although it is profit for the dealer but not for the salesmen and sales dept., They usually want to make about $1,500 over the pac. So, either go with the kbb trade in minus $1,000 or $4,000 of the asking price. Which ever is the least. For example, if kbb is showing the car trade in at $15,000 and they come down to $16,000 it would not be a bad idea to just take it unless you want to see just how far down they will come. In that case, stand firm at $14,000. If they throw you out, you could always leave and see if the salesman will call you back with a better offer.
Now, financing. That is a whole another ball of wax.
Oh, my 8 has 78,000 miles and still runs like a top.
