I was told yesterday that the L reflash would be $90 to do off warranty.

So if Mazda does plan to fix the PCM unit, and contact all RX 8 owners? Wouldn't this just require some repogramming?

If you tell them you've flooded it or had hard starts they should do it under warranty though, yes? Especially now that there's a TSB on hard starts and flooding that talks about updating the PCM. (and that you wouldn't be making it up, since you have had issues with flooding)

I think you have pushy service writers - this and them initially telling you that the tow for flooding wasn't a warranty would be enough to make me look for another place to deal with...

What is "L" and what is PCM? And how does this solve the problem? Thanks for the info

As a new member here I can only say that's it's disapointing to see someone called ignorant for asking some simple tech questions.

Perhaps if the person who posted that has grown that cynical with RX8 newbies then maybe he should find somewhere else to post where everyone is up to his speed on tech knowledge.

Maybe you bought your car six months ago and have been through the whole slew of issues with it already, but there are plenty of people who have just purchased the car and are still learning its quirks.

PCM (also ECU) refers to the computer running the engine. "L" refers to the latest upload to the computer (because the reference number ends in "L" - the next release will be "M" and so forth).

Earlier in this thread is a discussion of how this software reflash alters the fuel map and seems to decrease the chance of flooding the engine (from turning the engine on for several seconds to a minute or so not allowing the engine to reach operating temp and then shutting it off - refered to as the "Short Trip Driving Procedure" in the Quick Tips guide - then letting the engine sit for several hours or more).

For more info try the search function. Welcome to the club and hope this gets you off and running.

I think the comment was more related to frustration associated with how few people seem to actually read the owners manual and not a particular stab at anyone.

kelrx8 replied in a post asking to not be called names because he felt attacked. and regardless of what you think, and what the other guy was trying to say, it came across as snide. To everyone.

If you go back and read the post, it is a stab at anyone that is new to the car who may not be as thorough as some people are when it comes to these types of things. And like I stated earlier, if's he's really that frustrated with things along these lines then he really needs to put his efforts elsewhere because they are not productive for anyone.

I was taught that if you don't have anything good to say then keep it to yourself.
