As the years go by I have owned numerous rx's starting with a '74 RX-2 coupe and then there were the RX-3's and 1st gen 7's, 2nd gen 7's, turbo's and converts. Currently I drive an '88 vert w/ new black paint and top, rust free, I own an 87 turbo II and two 1st gen race cars (SCCA Ita and Its road racers). I have long lusted for an "8" but haven't made the financial commitment yet. The 12a and 13b engines are bulletproof without turbos so what is plaguing the Renesis?
Judging from the '09 changes the oil cooling and rotor lubrication systems have been completely redone so that apparently is a big problem.
With all the inside knowlege and or research that some of you guys have could i get an explanation of what is causing the renesis to die? I assume its mulitple reasons and some have said its more common to the automatics and I have read that heat and or sysnthetic oil is the issue. Please give me your knowlege. I am considering an '05 sport, the '08 40th model or the '09 R3.

 

The rotary engine can outlast a piston engine any day given the proper maintenance and care. Main things that cause the engine to go to hell is people redlining when the engine was just started a minute ago, putting a bottle of nitrous in it and not knowing how many pounds to put in, not redlining often can cause carbon buildup but you can also put some great products to help as well. I am not well versed with the oils but I can tell you that putting 30 weight isnt a bad idea. Pretty much since you know rotaries you should know how to handle this engine. Proper maintenance and your good to go man.

 

the issues are heat, oil, epa, ecu, fuel mileage.

redline lots, rp 5w30 oil, premix.

 

1 heat - may need mods in a hot climate
2 Carbon - just rev the snot out of it .
3 lubrication - largely rectified now but premix is a good preventative as well
4 Detonation (rare in NA)

aside from everything thats been mentioned about oil, heat, revving etc which are all great points, i feel that one thing that will kill the rotary, maybe faster than a piston engine is lack of maitenance. as you all know the rotary is sensitive to oil, coolant, gas, and proper warm up. those who do not maintain ther car or engine will see a signifigant decrease in overall vehicle life.

 

All rotary engines from the very first 10A through the 13B MSP are sensitive to flooding. But common sense fixes that most of the time.
