Dumb Gas Question

I was told when i bought my RX8 that it required premium fuel. Then today I was talking to a friend who used to own an RX7 and he was saying that they were able to run off of 68 octane. So, was the dealership BSing me? or was the RX7 simply a sturdy rotary?

Mazda recommends premium fuel. They require at least 87 octane.

Where did your friend find 68 octane for his RX-7?

The RX8 wants 91, the older RX cars liked 87.

Some can and others can't. The only way to find out is give it a try and if you don't hear MIAC (Marbles In A Can) which is what detonation sounds like in a rotary (ping in piston engines) then your OK. If you do hear MIAC, add prem-fuel or mid-grade right away or you will hurt your engine. It will be worst on very hot days when you are accelerating hard. You can do the throttle body by pass too, it helps. I can run reg-87 now that Mazda did the de-carbon cleaning on my engine.

Unless you have a Turbonator, which is based on jet engine technology.

Even if you HAD some 68 Octane rated gas - how would you know?
Take it to PepBoys and get 'em to measure it?
Buy an 'Octalyzer' at WalMart?

And also as it has been said before, why not follow the mazda specifications in your "sports" car and get all of the performance you can out of it since it is only like $2 more per fillup.

Maybe he works for an oil company...

Just buy the premium and good premium, like Chevron or something. Skimping on gas and oil will hurt you someday.

You also were given an owners' manual. What does it say? Here's what mine says:
