we pulled out the bottom part of the air filter box, the car sounds alot louder/cooler (sounds like a mini super-charge or something) and yet still using the same stock air filter....does anyone know why the sound changes so much without the bottom box?

uh...

I forget the layout. But if your air filter is exposed to the radiator fans, you're screwed when they turn on. Your MAF will go apeshit.

Sound changes because the stock box air is routed through the VFAD in the bumper. It hides a lot of the sound. It also brings cold air from the bumper in... you don't want your intake to suck air from the engine ebay.

nope...it is not exposed to radiator fan at all. there is still another plastic piece that blocks between the fan and the filter

actually...I do want to ask, my real question....the reason I took the air filter out today was because I notice some lost of power lately with my car, I figure it might be my air filter....but I was wrong, my air filter is pretty clean....but in compare to my friend's AE86 stock.....I feel like my car is going at the same speed he does when we both pedal to the metal.....just not alot of low end torque at all

can anyone help explain what could be the problem for the performance lost

I think I know which *bottom* part you're talking about, put it back on. Sure you can try to leave it off, but when your intake suck something *big and hard enough* stuff up like a not so big rock, its gonna go thru your airfilter and oh u know where is it going to end up.

Theres a search button up there.

but I think no one can help you with questions like *Oh my car feels like it lost its mojo can anybody help ?*

MT or AT ? Year Model ? Miles ? Maintence Record ? How do you treat your car ?

run the **** out of it at least once a week, and push it hard for at least a moment every day. thats been the consistant recipe so far. i cant even guess the % of people, who drive hard vs. not, reporting problems like this or similar. but to my knowledge, those who baby the engine ALL the time are the large majority of those with probs

You baby it for 30000 miles ? damn no wonder its getting slower and slower.

You know what, go buy yourself a bottle of Prestone Complete System Cleaner (I think thats the name)

Empty your Tank first, dump that bottle in, Fill it up, and Drive it HARD.

Its not that hard to do that on interstates, keep it in 2nd Gear and run it @ 9K as much as possible.

Remember the fuel tank shielding recall we all had? The reason was someone was reving the **** out of his parked car till everything caught fire. I wonder if he was following advice from this forum

I like this thread. Who just starts pulling **** off their car to try to fix something?

"Hmmm, my car has been a bit slow lately. What can I randomly pull off in an attempt to rectify this?"

Take it to the dealer and have them look at it. When they give it back and say nothing's wrong (which they probably will), come search your symptoms on here and try some of the recommended fixes until you get the desired result.

Kickass video by the way.

from the feel of the low low-end torque in 1-5k rpm...it feels like an air problem...that's why I checked the air filter first

I tried that with the Apexi filter in the stock box. (pulling the bottom half of the air box off)

Not a fan of the sound... and it didn't perform any better. (The Apexi did smooth the response and idle though) (and with the full box encasing it it sounds good).

Have you changed your spark plugs yet?

I believe the maintenance recommendation is 30k on them.

Your maf could be dirty as well.

the only maintenance required is to wash it every week and make sure it's as clean as can be.

Umm... How do you feel it's an air problem from the low-end torque? Reminiscent of a familiar Mazda dealer I'll never go to again.
