D585 coils, Metal tab

I cant seem to find the answer to my question,

What is the purpose of the little metal tab that you see on the back of BHR coils/D585 coils that connect to the heatsink, here is a pic

RMS Product Details: D585 - Ignition Coil, Misc., D585

I wonder this because i have a set of coils that are missing these tabs

its possible to run without, but also note that it also serves as a (not ideal) heat transfer medium between the case and the heatsink, so if you can, it would be a good idea to just hack on a tab.
