is "cylinder #1" the front or rear rotor?

dealer reported "misfire cylinder #1"

i am changing the coils but i bought only two because of the dealer prices.

my question is: is 'cylinder #1' the front or rear rotor?

(im pretty sure the front two coils go to the front rotor)

thanks!

Sounds like you got your prob fixed but if your still looking to find out what "cylinder" is misfireing scan your paper from the dealer and post it. We can tell ya what "cylinder" is mistireing.

thanks!

i looked at the printout again and it said code P0301 and P0037. i was able to search up that the P0301 was the front rotor, although perversely the printout says "cylinder #1", presumably because that code is used for piston cars too.

(replaced the rear oxygen sensor too- thats probably the cause of my slightly lower mileage the last 6 months)

good preventative measure on replacing the o2 sensor. but it's a wide band sensor, if it starts failing (reporting) you'll get a CEL. definitely do the othe 2 coils, if you haven't done the plugs and wires, now is a good time also if your near the 30k more since last change.

dealership print out reported P0037- rear o2 sensor low voltage, but no CEL until fairly serious misfire. it was definitely not right before i got the flashing CEL and then on a later hard start that day the solid CEL.

thanks for the heads up on the wires- i remember my 1994 probe GT wires went bad in 96 around 37K miles (thats whats on my rx8 now). the OEM replacement set is still going strong for the current owner at 120+K miles.* go figure.

after reading that, i wonder if the misfire let enough unburned fuel into the exhaust to cool the cat and cause the control voltage to rise- throwing the P0037.

Unburned fuel entering the CAT causes the temp there to rise since the CAT would have to burn it off. So unburned fuel entering the CAT would cause it to overheat not cool. You get the bad O2 reading because the CAT uses up the nominal supply of oxygen in burning up the extra fuel.

so the dealer tried to charge me over $350 to replace a good oxygen sensor? (i didnt go for it) i told them it seemed like very low mileage for the sensor to go bad and they held their line.

this is mazda of oakland. they are a little better now, but i used to walk in there with corporate on speed dial for every single warranty issue. so id call MNA and they would call the dealer, where the service advisor would try to explain why they couldnt cover such and such.

hey, why isnt the sensor and coils covered by the emissions warranty?
