Cumulative Synthetic Oil Discussion
Are Mazda's warnings against synthetic oil meant for long-term use? Or any use at all?
Mobile One was mistakenly put into my car. I'm having it changed back to conventional oil tomorrow, but I've already driven 200 miles with the synthetic in there before I noticed that the receipt said "Mobile One."
I'm not looking to start a flame war about whether synthetics are bad or not, I'm just wondering *assuming Mazda's warnings are valid*, will 200 miles of Mobile One hurt anything?

The damage is irreparable in the eyes of Mazda.
You can try flushing your oil out with tomato juice, twice, it might get the M1 stink out. I think that's what people use after a skunk attack.
I think your best option is to cover your car in Castrol GTX and "Dino Oil 4EVER!!!" stickers. Maybe it'll fool them into not doing a Mobile One Oil Test (MOOT).
In all seriousness... just flush your engine with canola oil and you'll be fine.
It is not possible for a dealer to know what brand or type of oil you put in without sending it out for extensive testing, and even then, it's unlikely. And dealers don't do that.
They can also not legally void your warranty because synthetic oil was used, because no where does Mazda or the owners manual officially and legally state that synthetic is prohibited and/or that it will void your warranty. They simple state that they can not put forth a recommendation to use it because they have not tested it. If someone tries to void your warranty because of this, fight it, and you will win.

I realize not everyone agrees that synthetic is bad, but ASSUMING IT IS, would 200 miles lead to this supposed carbon build-up problem already? Or is it a problem that accumulates over thousands of miles?
I'm just freaking out because I lost my first engine at 78,000 miles, and I've been obsessively trying to do everything perfect to keep the new one going as long as possible. Now I feel like I just lost 20,000 miles of it's lifespan through no fault of my own...
First off, if the dealership performs any work on your car they cannot void your warranty as a result. Mazda does not segregate synthetic oil types based on what brand they are and Mobile1 offers many products that are more of a semi-synthetic than just a full synthetic.
A single oil change of Mobile1 will not destroy your motor. Synthetic oil will not destroy your motor on it's own. Mazda was simply unable to test all the flavors of synthetic oil in the RX8 so it was easier to just say NO than it was to take the warranty risk.
So relax, its going to be ok.

Yea well, I had that nasty fake M1 oil removed yesterday and replaced with REAL oil again... and I'm now getting 40mpg and making more torque than a Civic Si! So there!
Ahem. Seriously though, I did have the M1 drained and refilled with conventional oil. Why risk it? But yes, everyone should decide for themselves

They knew on mine when it was replaced a couple weeks ago, if only because when I brought in the receipts to show regular oil changes that Royal Purple was all over the purchase invoices.
I use Mobil1 one b4, car runs wonderful. bite me.
now I use Royal Purple, cuz I got it cheap a while ago.
when my RP pile runs out, I will start using Redline and Eneos, again I got them all cheap (I'm a deal hunter lol)

Mazda recommends synthetic in their racing rotaries.
Just needed to stir the pot.
In all seriousness there was one synthetic that they did not like so they stated that its not a great idea for the general public.
I recommend it for all my rebuilds. Just not the water thin 5w-20 that is for gas mileage.

Another interesting snippet I picked up chatting to someone racing RX8's in the UK the other day - they've been experiencing a lot of bearing failure and gear wear using mineral oil with customer cars.
After they switched to a decent synthetic (as it happens, the same Silkolene full ester as we've been using, 5w-30), no more problems with bearing wear, no problems with stationary gear wear either.

Is interesting...something one time only seen in higher mileage engines with Dino.
Lots of other variables which changed in S2's like Oil Pressure, a concern in S1.
Let alone temperatures.

So instead of taking a week off work to read this thread, has the forum or one of its highest regarded members come to a unanimous decision as to whether or not to use synthetic or non synthetic oil?
oh wait ...
