driving without insurance?!
you're an idiot and hopefully no one else was hurt in the process.

call shops around in the area, some will offer a 'free estimate'
tough to tell from just pictures

Before you rip the guy more, he might not have had COLLISION coverage and just liability, or liability/comprehensive. He couldn't have had a loan on it otherwise he would have had to have full coverage.

To me the obvious would be replace front bumper, hood, front fender(s), and headlight(s) because from ur pic it looks like it was damaged.

I have seen a couple of threads in the for sale with people parting out their entire car so u might be in luck in that aspect. I'd check with a shop first to see how much repair would cost, frame was still straight, and if there is anything else damaged that you cannot see.

Thanks for some of the replies guys...

got my first quote so far and it's around $8000.
If the rest of the quotes are over $4000 or $5000
I will probably just sell the parts...

Not sure how much I can get from parts tho?

no insurance? I hope no one else was hurt/no one else's property was damaged other than your own dumb self. and I hope your car is totaled and hope you will never be able to sell even a single clip on the car.

just finished school is NOT an excuse to drive around without insurance. Can I start robbing people on the streets cuz I'm ******* broke? that ain't an excuse, that's irresponsible.

wow, why are people so angry I don't have insurance?

Is it because you love rx8 too much and hate to see it like this,
or is it because you think I can't or won't pay for the damages without insurance?

Anyways I hit a garbage truck, just to let you guys know. No one was injured.
Was not drunk, was not speeding, pure accident.

Nycgps is always a bit upset, don't take it personal

But yes, insurance is there to cover for accidents... we hate seeing it because it's another of our beloved cars dead at the hands of someone who shouldn't be driving one. And drivers like you push our rates up (yes, uninsured drivers cost insured drivers more).

If you can't afford the car, including everything that goes with it, you shouldn't be driving it. Doesn't matter if it's a $500 pile of rust or a $1mil Veyron. Lesson learned the hard way.

We just wish you would have learned it through someone else first, and not first hand.

Even if it was an accident its totally stupid not to have insurance. In this instance you didnt hurt someone. If you had, you would basically owe them money for the rest of your life. Its probably against the law too.

Thanks for explaining, and I definitely will get insurance after this experience obviously...

...Called a few places up, many of them are saying not worth repairing since the airbags went off... =(... but will keep trying and see, before I sell off as parts (last thing I want to do)

frame damage.

look at where the fender meets the door, its pushed so far in.

also look at the engine bay shots where the bay looks to be crimped in.

if you had insurance it would be totalled out, for the reason above and usually insurance totals it out when the airbags go off. looks like you are going to be in it for the long haul. How did you manage to crash a auto? hah i kid...

Airbags are expensive to replace, also have to replace the stretched webbing in the seatbelts, those are expensive too. Its the little things that really add up. I estimate the airbags and seatbelts adding up to about the same $ as the body panels. front bumper, fenders, door(s) due to the fenders pushing in and denting them bad, possibly new radiator, possible new oil cooler, hood. probably some other stuff that i cant see in the pics.

technically you could just swap everything over new, and use a hammer to make **** fit correctly. There will always be uneven gaps, and you may have to jerryrig some stuff to fit. Thats not really the issue, its the frame bending issue. How would the car react to another hit in the front? maybe okay, but it starts to get dangerous after a second hit. Possibly the second hit would be dangerous. im not sure.

Mmmh. I'm sure radiator is gone, frame damage, intake, probably pcm, battery, EPS, fuse box, coolant tank and hoses, headlights, front bumper and hood. That would be at least 4k in parts alone, add paint job and labor it will be at least 7k, not to mention the electric issues you might get from all the wires that run in the front. Not worth it, just sell the parts and get another rex for 9k.

No insurance?! And you have the money to pay for a crash? But you dont have 50$ a month to pay for insurance? At least get a no fault policy. Imagine you hit another car or a pedestrian?! Your life as you know it would be over. A least a one side coverage will cost you almost nothing and you will be protectedto a base level.

As for your car, it seems totaled. Looks like you have frame damage, you will need too many new parts. I would either keep existing parts and buy another 8 or just partout!

Don't encourage him to buy another rx. He will most likely not insure that either and crash again.

Yeah I'm young and my insurance costs a fortune each month, but I'm responsible and it's the right thing to do.

If you can't afford to insure it, you shouldnt own it.

Enough of the life lesson, your car is totalled. Selling for parts. Have fun

Lets put it this way...

If you couldn't afford to buy insurance after you bought your car, then you definitely can't afford to repair the car.

So, what exactly was the reason why you didn't get insurance?
I'm guessing you're young (early to mid 20's), and your insurance agent said that with your bad driving record (multiple accidents and tickets beforehand) that to insure you for basic liability would be around $3k a year. Am I close?

Oh, and I would bet that had you hit a pedestrian, or another car, and yours wasn't as badly damaged as it was due to hitting a garbage truck (how the heck do you hit one, anyway? Its not like they're the fastest, most nimble vehicles on the road. Were you texting?), you probably would have ran.

Kid, I hate to tell you this, but this is NOT the worst experience of your life.
That's coming, when the garbage truck company sends you the bill for their truck, and when the state prosecutes you for not having insurance, and being involved in an accident. You're going to need to have an SR-22 for quite a long time.

The next time you ask for insurance, its probably going to be 50% higher.
So if you didn't think you could afford it this time, just wait until the next time you ask for a quote.

BC.

op, first off you fail for not having coverage. it looks like an auto and they arent worth **** (not that the mts are expensive anymore). it would most likely cheaper to buy a new car.

btw there is no way anyone could give you an estimate from your pics, there is sooooo much more involved. plus it looks like you are in another country. prices vary greatly by location. scrap it/part out and get a new car with insurance

1. Not against the law in New Zealand to not have insurance. Over half the population does not have it.

2. We have ACC which is a tax system everyone in the country is on that pays for accidents to the human body if it were to occur.

3. I did not pay for insurance because half my friend's and family do not have it

4. First accident I ever had. Been driving for 8 years, I am 23 (New Zealand allows teenagers to drive starting from 15).

Just read the american law, and apparently it's against the law to not have insurance.
Like I said above, I live in New Zealand. The law here does not require everyone to have insurance.

We pay high taxes for accident coverage. Income tax is up to 60%, Salary PAYE tax is 20%, GST is 15%. Which is why half the population here do not have insurance.

It doesn't really matter anyway... that car is totalled.
As others have stated frame damage + deployed airbag = total loss. The frame damage alone makes it not worth to rebuild a car, that's the sad truth.

bse50,

I understand it's total loss. However if I sell it whole (not in parts) on a car website, do you think I could get like $4k or $3k from it?

Thanks
