Ok, I know what DSC is, but is it a module? a computer program? If you don't have it already, could you add it later? Just curious.

probably not. dsc is software and a slew of sensors. you dont really want it anyway

Well, I like mine, especially in the rain, but I'm not really a good race driver. If you are, then you're probably going to turn the DSC off, anyway.

What hardware does TCS/DSC need that isn't already there? All RX-8's have wheel-speed sensors (for ABS) and electronic throttle control.

for one, i know there's a lateral G sensor somewhere, and probably a seperate dsc control unit.

non GT cars may have the g sensor though, because I know the NAV system uses it too, and you can get NAV without GT

The reputation of DSC on this forum is very good, so I think this is a valid question.

The parts you would need to retrofit DSC would be a DSC HU/CM (Hydraulic Unit/Control Module) to replace your ABS unit, the necessary hoses, a combine sensor (yaw/G-sensor), a DSC switch for the dashboard, a steering angle sensor, and now the big one - TAH DAH!! A new PCM!

I would have to check the parts catalog to verify if the PCM is a different p/n to the non-DSC one, if it is not then you should be able to reprogram the present PCM. This is necessary for torque reduction control, which DSC also handles.

It will take too long to explain DSC in detail here, but it basically works like this:

The ABS releases brake pressure from the brakes to prevent them locking up, and has a pump to pump the fluid from the lines back to the brake reservoir.

The DSC uses this same strategy (and basically the same components) to release brake pressure on a particular wheel when necessary, but also uses the pump and extra valves to increase the brake pressure sometimes.

The HU/CM uses wheel speed data from the wheels, yaw/G data from the combine sensor (under the passenger's seat), and steering wheel angle data from the steering angle sensor to determine what state the vehicle is in.

There is also a connection to the engine management system through the PCM, which lowers engine torque (retards the ignition timing and injection) when excessive wheel spin is detected.

This all sounds rather obtrusive, but to date all press and owner reviews have been very positive. It is a very fast, sensitive, intuitive system. But it would be a pain to retrofit! You can ask your local dealer for prices on the above parts though, just for information's sake.

It should be good for your safety. If you could get it installed for cheap, then go for it. I don't have DSC, but I see that as an advantage coz then I wouldn't be pushing my 8 too hard that could get me into an accident. I also enjoy every chirp I get when shifting to 2nd :D

I also get to play with it when I want to.

No DSC here either. I dont miss it since I havent driven one with extensively. Ive hit turns in mine that would make other cars get loose (like my stang). Im afraid to drive any harder than that. Besides, the cost would probaly be outrageous to install it afterward.

Also, are you inquiring for your 6 or do you have an 8 as well?

it's a nice safety feature to have for your wife, but when you wanna let her rip. you gotta press the button! not to mention hold it down!

fwiw...i've found no difference between pressing and holding the button...expect for once, I had only pressed it (activating the DSC off light, but not the sliding car light) and did a hard 2nd gear slide, and the sliding car flashed (like it does with DSC on) and the engine pooped on me.

i think with just a tap on the button, the DSC system gives you alot of room, but will still try and save your *** at high speeds.

Technically, it probably can be done, if you find a dealer who has the ***** to do it. My guess is you won't! It's going to be amazingly expensive, both in hardware and labour.
Audi had (or offered) to retrofit ESP (same thing, init) on early TT after a few crached in high speed motorway bends in Germany.

I couldn't get the prices for the parts on-line unfortunately, I tried!
You don't need a new PCM, the present one can be reprogrammed. You do need to check on the vehicle that the harnesses are there, using a wiring diagram to verify that all the necessary pins are in each connector. Maybe your friendly dealer will do that for you next time you have the vehicle in for servicing.

I think it is worth at least finding out the parts prices. Let us know if you continue with this...
