Coincidence?

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to figure out if this sounds logical or if the dealership is trying to rip me off. I have a 2006 rx8 that had developed a rough idle, so I took it into the dealer and had the plugs replaced. They were the original plugs with about 68k miles on them.

A week or two later, the car lost its power... especially on the top end. The exhaust note also had an odd sound/idle to it. So I took the car back in and they said it was the coil packs and replaced them.

The next day the check engine light came on, so the car went back to the dealer. They said the code it is throwing is P2004, which is something about the intake valve stuck open. They told me they only have one guy who can diagnose it and there is no way any of the previous work could have effected it. I brought the car back home and I'm trying to figure out where to go from here.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Well I dont see why they would lie to you about that.. If you are skeptical take it to an Autozone and get them to read your code and tell you what the number is, and see if they are the same.. If they are, then he was telling the truth.. With the rough idling, the first thing we point users at is coils plugs and wires.. You have done two of those now, is the rough idling gone? Or is it still there?

Problem is... when you view a code, it could have been caused by so many components.
You usually go off of the "most obvious/likely" component and go from there.
Changing original plugs at 68k would have definitely been my first recommendation.

The P2004 code is for the APV stuck open.
The valves could be actually stuck or the motor (which houses the position sensors) could be giving it false readings.
This is something that would need to be verified by someone, either yourself or the dealer.
