Coil, Ignition Wires and Spark Plugs HELP!!!!!

Hi I have a 2006 RX8 and i was just told by the dealer I need ignition coil, ignition wires and spark plugs

I am kinda of handy and have worked on cars in the past, but not this one.

Is this a hard job to do?

If not, can someone tell me where I can find some low cost parts? Thanks.

Sure. It's a 1-2 hour job.

You can get the OEM parts at www.finishlineperformance.com

Plugs are $80/set of 4
Wires are $100
coils are $30each and you need 4.

ORR you can go to www.blackhaloracing.com and get their upgrade kit. Definitely the best reliability mod. for this car. Keep in mind though the dealer may give you a hard time on warranty work in the future even though it's a better design than OEM.

You take out the airbox and the coils are right there on a bracket on top of the engine.

Then jack up the drivers side of the car and take the wheel off. The plugs are right there. You replace them and then match up the coils and wires to the plug one at a time as you replace the wires.

There are some DIYs on this forum. Search and you'll find.

I changed all that stuff recently and with patience almost anybody should be able to do it. The hardest part for me was finding enough extensions to get to the plugs (taking front driver side tire off makes them fairly easy to get to) and then breaking them free after they'd been there for 4 years thanks to the previous owner. Ignition coils are pretty easy to get to after the intake box and accordion stretchy hose come out, just again need a pretty long extension (and make sure you don't drop the nut when you're picking it up!)

^^ DIYs for spark plugs and coils

As for parts...

THmotorsports might still be running this special, new oem plugs and wires for $117. I got some a month or so ago, you should send them a PM.

There are a few ppl here (including myself) who are using BHR coils from Orielly auto. They're OEM spec (with a lifetime warranty) and you can get all 4 for something like $160. They don't keep them in stock but my local store ordered them and they were there ready to be picked up the next morning.

Good luck

Which coils are you talking about?

Search the DIY section for instructions.

I recomend BHR coils as you never have to replace them, almost guareenteed it won't flood because of hotter spark and a performance gain.

Is this correct? Can we have more opinions here because I was told that specifically for RX8, you should only use OEM for sparks, coils, leads otherwise you get trouble where you don't expect it.

I am about to order the complete set (Sparks + Wires + Coils) and I was thinking about OEM for all of them but now I reconsider. That upgrade won't cause any side effects? i.e. more fuel consumption, rougher idle, etc.?

With OEM, you will be in the same boat in the future. As far as BHR ignition. Will dealerships cause issues about them not being OEM? Does anyone know for sure? I think that question is preventing some of us from buying them, even though you could just take them off and put the old ones on when going to the dealership.

As far as fuel consumption. It should make no difference considering the same amount of fuel is being pumped in. It will most likely burn the gas more efficiently I think. As far as rough Idle. The misfires should not be a problem any more but besides that , I cant imagine ignition having any say in the way the engine moves around.

PM Charles R. Hill or search the BHR ignition thread on this forum. There are tons of opinions on it.

My bottom line opinion is the stock ignition system has been proven to be the weakest link in the cars performance. The BHR system is on hundreds of cars including turbocharged cars and shown to be reliable, durable, and provide driveability improvements over stock.

I have the Mazsport ignition as well, which is inferior to the BHR system, and it is an improvement over stock.

I do recommend taking it off if you need to take it to the dealer for warranty work to avoid having the warranty discussion.

If I were you I would:

Buy the BHR kit and install it.

When you have to take it in to the dealer for warranty work buy 4 OEM coils and just swap it back to stock with 4 new coils so the dealer can't complain that the coils are shot. That's what I do.

The more you read/search, the more you will be convinced.

Both Mazda and dealers across the country are starting to understand that a much hotter/better spark is an improvement over what Mazda has going on and BHR is making headway on the warranty issue.

sad part is most dealerships are still loaded with idiots and as soon as they see something "not original" they slap a bs on you saying they will void your warranty.

Thank you guys, I am convinced. Assuming they will provide reasonable shipping price for international delivery, I will go with it. Unfortunately most times though they give you very high prices for delivery which stop you from buying from USA. Let's wait and see their offer.

Just like themodcity, I too have a 2006 rx8. She has about 35k and is AT. No pre-mix, no mods (yet)! All fluid changed and using dino 5w-20!

Just for reference, I too have been working on piston engines for 20 years, but really I’m intrigued by the rotary concept! Based on fuel trim readings one “can” decipher lean and rich conditions warranting leaking seals, restricted filtrations and other problems that can occur….limited to piston engines lol!

After a long drive (4hrs) and about to make a left turn I had a misfire condition. I had about 1/2 tank of gas. I too also assumed coils, plugs and wires, but also wondered about the fuel pump. I never got a CEL to light or flash. As I had momentum on the left turn I did not want to add more throttle to aggravate the motor into destruction! I basically gave her just enough to roll to my house stumbling away. Once I made the complete left she still kept stumbling and I pressed the accelerator slightly to keep her barley going to make it home just 500 yards away!

My wishful thinking is to do the ignition upgrade and fuel pump together!

I am still under factory warranty and was told by dealer they could not duplicate the problem ...... ! After both (dealer and I) knew the condition of the plugs, and wire connections, I was looking outside the box and so many posts on this forum dedicated to this phenomenon. Compression was checked and really did not request a copy of the report as I had just gotten the car and also became a member of this forum, I admit to being ignorant! I did however question the factory coils. Dealer says nothing!

One thing I wanted to ask and maybe for future reference for this post. I do understand it is important for our cars to warm up to operating temps.

Now, when I start the car in the morning she starts fine. After warm up via temp gauge reaching nominal operating range, I am usually in my garage working on something and I "hear" a slight stumble or misfire every ten to twenty seconds lasting less than a sec on the stumble. Sorry I do not have an Olympic stop watch to quantify the time on paper of the duration but it is under a second. A/C Compressor is off btw.

I do not have any CELs and nothing on my CAN scan tool to read anything out of range. Is this considered normal or do I make the assumption that adding the BHR kit will cure me of this "stumble" at a duration that is less than a second and doing it every ten to twenty seconds? Elusive to the initial misfire, neither the dealer nor I could duplicate the misfire.

I thank you for reading this and do apologize in advance if this has been posted elsewhere. So many posts to read, I am on this forum for hours on end studying this fascinating machine!

Thank you
Rick

Is $30 (USD) for international shipping cheap enough for you?

Andreasy, I'm not living in the USA either and BHR gave me no problems in shipping out to me.

How much do you charge for the parts. Coils and wires as a package deal plus shipping? I live in South Florida

Your prices on the OEM coils and wires are off. You can find the wires for under $80, and no one has the OEM coils for $30 each...I wish. The best I found them for anywhere online was closer to $38 each.

$30 would be reasonable. However you quoted me for $53.60 (today 28/10). Maybe it was mistaken?

raknaks.
I think it is pretty normal to hear that. I wouldnt baby it too much next time you hear it on the road. As far as the the BHR, I am thinking that its probably your best option right now. It should help give a stronger spark, which in turn should burn the fuel more efficiently. From what I am hearing ( so its just from here say), it should keep you from having to keep buy annoying ignition coils. With a healthy ignition, you will also greater the chance of not flooding your engine and gumming up the spark plugs.

Oops. Either way the lesson is do your own research and don't rely on others to spoonfeed you?

Yup. Fuel pump is another common problem that BHR has a solution for. It's a well documented problem with a good DIY on this forum as well. Check out www.blackhaloracing.com for a replacement fuel pump.
