perhaps it will help anyone who runs across the same issue. which seems to be cropping up quite a lot lately and only with the VDI solenoid for some reason(the center one, perhaps which gets hotter than the other 2 and also is worked more often).

considering they last about 100k miles, a replacement unit should last as long as the original. i wouldn't worry about a more long term solution than just replacing them.

I just replaced my solenoid. so far it seems to have worked. However, your comment on not worrying about a more long term solution insinuates this is more then just part failure. if so, would you please explain?

SO, all this time you've been harassing me because of something I have offered in another thread???
But you keep telling me I'm wrong with 'THIS' thread!!! yet what I have offered is all results of search and research,,, and apparently works.
Again, if you make a cohesive argument or tell me what it is you have a problem with I am willing to listen. Or even leave a link for something you think I have missed. But I need more then just 'Search More' and harassment about some "complete solution" you keep erroneously claiming I have offered here.

titaneum, he won't be around to respond for a while. Just shrug it off and calm down.

I didn't mean to come off all that upset.
I was hoping to settle his gripe with me, mostly for regard you have expressed about his character, in the past.
I will leave it alone.
Thank you.

I read your post and although the code was different I'm wondering if the part you needed was the same? And, if you can you let us know how you got your part for $40, My dealer wants way more.

Seems like my CEL is back and I will have to do more then just rescuing connections and lines. your post helps.

Sorry I didn't go back to this thread since my last post eight months ago, Angelo. I'm glad you finally got around and replaced the solenoid, I hope that link helped. Anyway, the solenoid I bought and used is an extra piece from a local Mazda Club member, from a Mazdaspeed Protegé, in fact. I passed emissions with it and since have had any CEL from the day I installed it. But keep in mind, mine is simply for the Air Pump while yours is specific for the SSV valve.

Thanks for your DIY. I used it to install my solenoid. The shortcut was a bit tricky, since I'm healing from surgery, but I found that a 1/4" drive set made all the difference.

no, the problem lies in the solenoid itself and not being able to handle the heat and duty cycling for more than that period of time. some fail in 60k, some last 130k before tossing the code.

but it is not a horribly complcated job to replace and the part is about $125 to last you another 5-10 years.

the main issue is quite simply engine bay temperatures cooking components.

Thanks, it was a pain but not too complicated.

Now I'm getting the p2259 code. The dealer said to check out the secondary air pump. the trace starts with a 60amp fuse to a relay(B1-03) in back of the passenger headlamp and then to the pump(B1-04). so far I checked the pump and it works. was thinking it might be the relay,,, but after reading another thread I'm thinking I have to go back in behind the IMH again and replace the blue solenoid.

Wondering if I should just get two solenoids and replace the bottom one as well, while I have it all apart again.

2259 is a similar code associated with the air pump solenoid in the same area but it is the top side solenoid.

be sure you didn't rip out a wire while pulling the connectors out, i have done that.

also be sure you didn't replace the wrong solenoid, plugged it back in snug and switched positions back if you did the test noted previously with the dynamic chamber solenoid/air pump solenoid. air pump top blue connector, VDI center white connector.

2259 is thrown when the ECU senses either an open or short to ground in the solenoid wiring which can also indicate a faulty solenoid itself. find the blue connector, note the solenoid it is plugged into, be sure the wires to the connector are intact, backprobe the wires and see if they read over 5v with the key on, if not replace that solenoid as well, but i haven't had a car take out 2 simultaneously before.

I had been getting the P0661 code for about 10 months before I was able to change the solenoid. about a month before I did so I started getting the P2259 code as well. I'm pretty confident that I put the new solenoid in the correct spot,(as the code cleared and did not return). Since I already had the P2259 code I don't think I damaged the top solenoid but will check the wires when I go back in.
the dealer specs on the code refer to a low voltage to the secondary air pump. that is why I was checking that electrical circuit there first. I have attached documents.

all references to 2259 refer to the air pump solenoid, not the air pump itself.

It was a very obvious cel, but op insist its not what it is since the begining, I almost laugh to death when he said he got the complete solution ... and bitch at whoever said he was wrong.

9 months have past and who was right? But of course op never gonna admit he f ed up.

ANd now, Everything for 2259 said its the top solenoid, but again for some reason he just gotta say its the air pump, wow, I mean the air pump its just either on or off, and he gotta waste all these time just to spread bs info ?

feel really sorry for whoever fell for this bs thread.

title was wrong, info were either completely wrong, or you can just find them in FSM, and all op did was to confuse the crap out of people(especially newbies who tries to learn), god.

I'm out Good luck

thanks, you are correct.
I checked the pump and relay, they were fine. Not sure why the dealer tech suggested I start there.
Anyway, I installed the new solenoid without having to remove everything again. I picked up the part on line by referencing it, Mitsubishi K5T49091, at a fraction of the dealer cost.

pay no mind to the troll, he has been twisting everything I write and flaming my posts for almost a year now.
not sure why he gets it all backwards but you can read the posts and make your own decision, if so inclined.
he says he's out but he always comes back.
I think he has a crush on me.

thanks again to everyone who offered help.

thanks for the alternate part number, the factory solenoid usually runs about $125 and a bit of a price gouge if you ask me. the upside is most dealers carry it in stock, if you need to take care of it in a hurry.

I had this trouble code on my 04 rx8 and i purchased one of the solenoids off ebay for about 25$ shipped. Took off the upper intake manifold, replaced the middle sensor to find that the old sensor was clogged.
Now my rx8 runs great again

I noticed it was time to get the part replaced when I was going up the 15 freeway here in the inland empire to victorville and the car was seizing up the hill with loss of power....
Also when I pushed it on an on-ramp the car seized as if it wasnt shifting...

Anyways now its running great just thought I would put my experience on here for anyone with similar problems...

I have an aem intake and all i had to remove were the 7 bolts on the upper intake manifold and a couple more on the actual intake.

I got the check engine light on last week and today went to a mechanic shop I know and the owner told me that the estimator for the repair says it would take 8 hours to do and $600 to do it plus the cost of parts, I told him to take a hike, I see all you guys had the same problem and resolve it by changing the solenoid, I am in Atlanta and with a tight work schedule I don't have the the time and tools to do it my self, can anyone that lives in Atlanta refer me to someone that can do the work for a lot cheaper?. I do have loss of power when the car accelerates to 5k RPM's, and it struggles to get to the red line, was worrying it was my engine, but after reading the threads I know is know my engine, the car has 101384 miles, thanks for the input.

I know this is an old thread, but i have that P0661 code also, but i have not seen any issues yet, i do however see at 6500 RPM's i get a big boost of power, kind of like when a turbo kicks in lol, anyways i guess my question would be, what happens in the long run if this issue is not fixed? I have read the full thread and didnt see anyone comment what would happen in the long run.

Just wanted to throw this in there, i have a 2004 rx8 and i have been reading that the rx8 for this year and the 05 gets clogged up with **** from the oil if it over flows, so what i will be doing this Thursday is taking the whole top off the engine and cleaning everything, i will post pictures of everything that i cleaned, i also ordered a greddy 1 liter oil catch can to help with this, after i clean everything and put on the oil can, i will clear the code and see if it starts again, if it doesn't then it worked if it didnt, well then my engine will be cleaner and i will have new gaskets on lol.

just replace the solenoid, and all the gaskets/orings.

it's not clog, it's just dead from heat.

Cheaper option for solenoid replacement

OK, so anyone who is looking for an alternative place to buy said solenoids from outside the dealership, I have good news.

Here are some part numbers for you to shop around with:

Dorman# 911-707
NAPA# ECH 2-26874

I purchased the Dorman part online for $35, installed it, and tested it. It fits and works perfectly! I hope this helps save you some $$$$$. Autozone and O'Riellys carry dorman products if you need to find it faster. The NAPA part is much better quality though. But for $97, might as well go OEM, I think.
