Clicking Noise when Braking

Clicking Noise when Braking
Hello everyone! I've done some searching on this site and on RX8 Web.com and haven't been able to find anything that relates. Here is my issue:
While coasting in my driveway, I brake to wait for my garage door to open fully and when I'm almost at a complete stop, I hear a series of 2 to 3 metallic sounding clicking noises. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hrm, I recently got the new non-squealing brake pads installed, and after about 500 miles, my left brake started doing this clicking. It happens at low speeds and at high speeds. I'm worried that some screw's loose or something that could potentially fall apart. My right brake has also been making some strange warbling, groaning sounds...kind of as though something's not spinning evenly and is wobbling as it's spinning. I wonder if it's a screwed up rotor resurface, since they had to resurface the rotors after changing the pads. Also I can hear the calipers making a sort of creaking noise when I brake in the garage, as though they weren't oiled or something. Either way, I'm definitely telling the dealer about it when I go in for a safety check in August. This car has one seriously &)%#&)% up brake system.

I've never heard this noise, but if you're turning while hearing it this may be of interest: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...2-04-1301b.pdf

Vertigo-1: Thanks for the reply! Wouldn't be the same situation for me. I've never had my brakes done yet. I just got my 8 in March (it's a new 04). My brakes squeal like crazy but from everything I've read, when you get your brakes done the squeal goes away for a while and then comes back. So, I figured that I would just wait until they wore-out and replace them with some good aftermarket pads, rotors, and calipers.
rx8cited: Thanks for the info but I hear the noise while coasting/braking going straight (my driveway is straight, no curves or turns). The best way I can describe the noise is to tap a wrench on a metal surface 2 or 3 times. Once I make a complete stop, the noise goes away.
I love the car but reading everything on here is making me paranoid as hell!

I posted this last month:

It sounds like you have the exact same issue that I do. The dealer says its normal. There was a suggestion to check the caliper bolts. I have not yet had the time to check them to see if they are loose or missing.

msrecant, I read your thread. Yes, it is the exact same situation for me. Identical! Are you still having the issue or has it gone away?

Pad tensioner clips
The RX 8 uses, like many vehicles, small tesion clips, the head and bottom of pad sits snuggly inside to stop potential vibrations, and make for quite performance. The rears use a one piece set up, which traditionally seems to work better, (1 on top, 1 on bottom). Chances are your noise is comming from the fronts, not only because it handles most of the brake loads, but it uses a four piece set up, two up top, two below, more opportunity for these small, light structures to "drag" behind the caliper movement, which causes the "metallic" sound you, likly many others here when braking the 8s. This should not be confused with the "low pad" squealing sound, which is design in, to alert you that your brakes are on thier last legs. Unlike the tension clips, which, while not great for the rotor, will normally not cause damage, these design noise warnings, if left uncorrected will damage (score) the rotor.
So what's the cure for the"drag" tension devices- well you spend about $35, and buy a new kit (fronts) from Mazda, or you might try, a good brake cleaner, take wheels off, with car jacked, have someone spin the wheel while another gently applies the brakes and see where, exactly the noise is comming from. What you might find is, one of the little clips might be bent, or just dirty and getting stuck behind just enoughtouch rotor- These clips are somewhat fragil and are often bent by getting snagged on wash mit material, during normal wheel cleaning.

Click/clonk on initial brake application
I posted this same response in the thread "Brake click". However, it may not be applicable in this case, as I only receive one click with each brake application:
I appear to have the same metallic click (clonk?) on initial brake application as described in this thread. I have not, as yet, addressed this issue to my local Mazda service department.
(A) It is not, as some have suggested, associated with wheel nut torque.
(B) It is not as some have suggested, associated with brake caliper clips, etc.
(C) It does appear to be coming from one of three possible locations.
(1) Transmission
(2) Drive shaft U-Joints
(3) Differential
I have reached these conclusions on the basis that I have an automatic transmission equipped car and the noise can be duplicated in "Park" (with the handbrake off) by rolling the car (by hand) back and forth (as limited by driveline lash, of course). In this manner, the wheel nuts and brake calipers are not part of the equation - only the driveline. (For a manual transmission equipped car, I imagine that the same effect could be duplicated by putting the car in gear, with the handbrake off.)
