clanking noise from underneath that won't go away!!!

hey everyone,

i have been getting a noise come from under my 8 for the last month or 2 and it can't seem to be fixed. the noise only occurs when i go over a bump or turn from a complete stop, like at a red light. the noise sounds like a clank, metal on metal... kinda maybe sounds like the noise that a car would make if your muffler was loose and whenever you go over a bump, it would clang against the muffler brackets. i have had the car into 2 different dealerships over the past 2 weeks. both times that had claimed to have it fixed.

the first dealer i took it to said that my spare tire was loose!!! i knew this was a bunch of BS when they told me that because the noise sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the car underneath. so i leave dealership 1 and still have the noise. i took to dealership 2 and the guy there even took a ride around the parking lot with me to hear the noise. they did a little more work at this dealer and i though for sure that it was fixed. they replaced my engine cover and realigned the a/c lines and hood rack...

STILL HAVE THE NOISE THOUGH!!

i think i have decided to just say **** on it, if one of my wheels fall off or something, i still have the warranty to fall back on!!!! for now, i am still driving my 8 hearing a clank over every bump i go over

does anyone know what this may be??? please help if you know

thx

Take it to a garage where you and them can examine it throughly, or jack it up and look for your self.

My car is at the dealer for the recalls and a list of other small things to get fixed - one of them is the exact same noise. In my case, the clanking seems to come from the right front. It's easy to reproduce if I drive over those braille bumps inbetween the lanes with my right front wheel.
They are still working on the car but claimed over the phone that they were able to find the reason for this noise. I cross my fingers that they will indeed be able to fix it. I'll post once I get the car back, and we shall see.

I have the 'braille bump rattle' also, but it seems to be very particular about speed and crossing angle, i.e. it is not easy to reproduce. The dealer has not been able to find it. If anyone finds out what it is, PLEASE post your findings in this thread!

Have them check the suspension bushings for cracks or deformation.

I had the same underneath clanking noise. I thought the muffler had come loose or the something was banging around in the trunk. It turned out to be a bad rear shock. Dealer replaced under warranty, no problems since.

Had the same clank, and it turned out to be a bad front shock. My dealer refused to admit to any problem even though there was oil all over the base of the spring. I replaced all four with Konis.

In my case, the problem was that the backing plate for the right front wheel rattled against the rotor on uneven surface. The shop adjusted the plate and the noise is gone now (hopefully for good).
They also listed a part that was used - part number is F151-32-80X. Some sort of an 'insulation'.

Make sure your lug nuts are tight also... Loose lug nuts have similar symptoms.
