Checking for the "M" Flash

I just got my '8 back from the dealer, and I had the oil changed, tranny checked, some trim re-attached, and supposedly, the Computer flashed up to the "M" level.

I got in the car, and noticed that my radio presets were all just fine, and that my trip meter was still reading in the 170's (I left it at 169, so they didn't drive it much, just enough to test the tranny, which turned out to be fine).

I went to perform the 20-tap test, and I did NOT get the Oil pressure needle sweep. I may have been doing it wrong, but from what I am reading, all i need to do is turn the ignition on, and then tap on the brake petal 20 times quickly. am I wrong on this? Does this even work with the "M" flash? I KNOW I didn't have the "L" flash.

does anyone know..... does flashing the computer need a reset of the computer, aka, battery disconnect?

Another related question- doesn't the 20 tap test reset your car's computer? And isn't that supposed to be a bad thing if it doesn't need it?

When I had my flash done, it was clearly printed on the receipt. It showed that I was at calibration "J", and they flashed it to "M". I've also heard that they'll put a sticker on the ECM itself indicating the new level, but I haven't removed the cover on mine to verify it.

Hmm.. I will look at the reciept at lunch.. and see what I had previously. If nothing is listed, I will call them up and ask some questions (like why was my radio station changed and the bass at +5)

it wasn't driven hard or far, no gas was used, gas milage was matched up and everything when I filled it up....

I just want to know why these other things aren't apparent.

After the dealer supposidly reflashed me up to M, when I did the tap test my check engine light flashes three times. Since I went from a way early version to what I hope is the M flash I never saw the oil pressure needle sweep. Unfortunately my receipt didn't have the version they flashed to and I also have to pull off my ecu cover to see if the annotated the change. But I would n't be terribly surprised if the tech never put on the little sticker. I mean who would see it anyway right?

Ok, it took exactly an hour and here is what they said they flashed it with: SW-NBH6 EM000. I suppose this is the "m" flash they are talking about it said "calibrated with a later ECM config." Haven't driven much except home and it does seem to be smoother climbing the rpm's.
Anyone know if that is the "m" flash or not? Any way to check?

that is the part # for the pcm flash. the letter after the "E" is the letter for which calibration you have. in this case they are stating that you now have the "M" calibration.

Ok, is it just me getting the needle sweep then? This is crazy, you guys have been M-flashed but no needle sweep with the brake-tap test?

Well, here's what happened to me. When I did the brake-tap test, while I was still in the dealership, it the oil needle didn't sweep as I counted 20 taps. BUT I didn't stop there, I kept tapping on it for maybe 10 - 15 more taps. Just don't stop tapping it until you exceed 10 seconds or 15 seconds perhaps. I'm guessing they had to increase the tap trigger to distinguish L and M. Trust me guys, my receipt says M, my blue sticker on the door panel says M, and the brake-tap sweeps the needle.

ok. I will go out to the car and try it again. I turn the key on, the radio and stuff come on, the dash lights all come on and most go out, then I start tapping my foot off.... right?

Ok. went out there.. got the Needle Sweep. YAY. I just had to keep tapping. I wasn't able to really get on it on the ride home tonight, but I did get the blinking trac light a few more times than I usuallly remember... I wonder if that has to do with it... :-P

See? I really think that the "M" flash responds to 30-brake taps compared to 20 on the "L".

That is the "OP" code and time the dealer got for re-flashing the car

OK, i got my "M" flash this week but I cannot get the brake test to work... i got the car in Jan, fresh off the boat, still in the plastic, so i'm sure it already had the L flash.....

under the hood though, there is a new modifictaion sticker with this on it:

date: 4-27-04
campagn code: 1604B
and a dealer number

so i assume they did it..... the car has been running smoother though and mileage seems better, but not by alot....

Mine was flashed today and all I know is my oil needle sweeps but haven't figured out which flash I got. Couldn't get an answer from service "the latest"... My service summary simply says
Checked and pulled codes None found
Reflashed PCM and roadtested. The only reference I can find is 24MAZ.

So I have a new flash and can definitely feel smoother first gear and second shifts --- less jerking and but dyno power. Certainly FEELS like an improvement. It also seems to sound a little different. Time will tell on mileage but it is not likely to improve for some time as I search out a new feel with the car with this new flash. Yippeeeee

I will look at the ECU for a new sticker but at this point I am not sure I care if I got L or M...

I got my M flash today also.. I wrote a long write-up under the sticky for the "M". My oil needle did the sweep...I talked to the Tech directly and he told me I had K and it was upgraded to M. Sticker was on the driver's door with M clearly written in bold ink. Harrelson Mazda - Charlotte, NC - had to show the TSB!

Got the big "M"!

I found a transparent sticker under the hood underside that says:

Authorized engine modification 5/7/04

N3H6-18881-M
