Changing Fuel Pump

Morning all - I am a member of the 150,000 Club and I am due for alot of Maintenance. I am ordering new plugs coils and wires but I want to replace (I know it is on its last breath) the Fuel Filter and Pump. I did a search here and no luck. Can someone point me to a thread or at least tell me what I am in for?

I have seen numerous threads from people who did it and I am mechanically smart. Used to change them in some of my older muscle cars.

Any assistance is appreciated!

the fuel pump is mad easy to replace but there is only one catch ----- you WILL NEED the correct tool to take the fuel pump cap off.

You can start by going the left rear seat cushion, you can just take that off by lifting it UP. then you'll see a piece of metal cover with 4 screws. take them off, you will see the fuel pump.

You can see the pump is covered by a plastic cap. thats the hardest thing for the whole fuel pump replacement. some people got it off by using a small flat head screw driver + a plastic mallet. but I dont really recommend that, cuz if u break enough of those plastic tab on the cap, you will be fuxked.

You can ask your local Mazda dealer and see if they're willing to lend you the tool, if you're buddy buddy with them, you can just do it in their parking lot.

Basically, this is how it works :

First, make SURE you have really really REALLY REALLY low fuel left in your tank. or else the fuel will be all over the place and smells for a longggggg time. I suggest you to drive at least another 30 miles AFTER the fuel light has turn on.
There is a proper way to de-pressurize the fuel lines, but Im kinda lazy, so I just let it sit overnight. most pressure would be gone by then, fuel is still in the hose, so expect some to "spill" when you open it.
Go order a brand new Fuel Pump Cap, Fuel pump Gasket, and of course, Fuel Pump(dont worry about the filter, its build into the pump)
Take the Cushion off
Take the metal cover off
Un hook your battery, press your brake pedal and wait a couple of minutes (to drain electricity, Cuz a tiny little spark while the fuel pump is out can instantly kill you)
Make sure you have no static electricity on you (touch some metal parts and wear cotton t-shirt and jeans.
Unplug all the wires on the pump
Unplug the "quick connector" on the pump. becareful with this connector, DONT BREAK IT. if u never played with these kind of connectors before, it takes some time to "understand" how to pop it loose, once u know how, its very easy. just dont force it no matter what.
Get a stack of old newspaper to catch any fuel when you move the pump since the pump will store a good amount of fuel inside it and when you move it, it will spill and if it gets on your car. its not going to smell good for a long time.
use the fuel pump special tool (its a sliver looking thing) and twist it open, if you have the tool, it takes less than 10 seconds to open it.
throw the old gasket away
throw the old Fuel pump cap away
take anything thats attached to the fuel pump out, be REAL careful with the quick connector in the middle of the pump and DONT BREAK IT. if u do ... lets just hope not. OH also, REMEMBER THE WAY IT WAS, YOU NEED TO PUT IT BACK EXACTLY THE SAME WAY.
take the pump out slowly (fuel is still on it) and dump it on the stack of newspaper.
take your new pump out, look at it, one of the tube inside the tank will connect back to the quick connector. remember this connector is mad weak and breaks easily, if you break that plastic thing on the pump, you can frankinstein It with the old pump's part. but if u break both. u need to buy a new pump.
put it back the way it was and slowly submerge it back into the tank.
Put the NEW gasket in.
put the cap back using the special tool, tighten it back to the way it was, do NOT overtightened it !
wipe ANY fuel around it, and let it evaporates for a bit.
connect the wires and fuel connector back.
again make sure no fuel is around
connect the battery back
turn your car on
let it warm up
Look at the pump. see if there is any leaks.
idle till warm.
rev the **** out of your car like u've never seen a rotary before.
check again and see if there is any leak.
nothing? ok.
drive for maybe 20 minute or so with all kinds of rev
still no leak? ok, put it back together.
Now, Feel happy.

Parts needed :

New pump -- a hundred something
New pump gasket -- I forgot, was it like 10 or 20 bux?
New pump cap --- I forgot how much it cost
Time -- 2 hours if this is your first time
some tools to take out the battery --- you should have them
Screw driver for the metal plate -- you should have them
Special Fuel pump cap tool from Mazda ---- 200 something bucks brand new.

For the Fuel pump cap tool, if you have a new pump cap, you can take your cap and visit your local welder or heavy machine shop and ask to see if they can fab a tool for you. it probably will cost you 40-60 bucks. I got a tool like that from Mazsport (now out of business)

Well, like I said before, if you have a new fuel cap around, you can take it to some welder/heavy machine shop and ask them to fab a tool for you. it probably cost around 40-60 bucks.

or you can get the official Mazda too, you HAVE TO get it from Mazda dealers. and it cost 200 something (if I remember correctly)

I made the SST myself in about 20 minutes with some steel scrap and a 17mm bolt.

Just about anyone with welding equipment could replicate it easily.

Im thinking maybe I should just get the tool, and send it out to whoever needs it (need a deposit of course + shipping )

Hmm, you're in NJ? You can ask Wayne Mazda and see if they would lend you the tool (pay them a small fee or free ... ) and u can just replace it at their parking lot.
