catback exhaust?

My cat is clogged so I've decided to buy an aftermarket exhaust to replace it. Thing is I don't know much about cars so if I buy a catback, would I have to buy a new cat too? I know I can replace it with a midpipe but if its cheaper to just get a midpipe rather than buy a catback and a cat too. I really need to replace it soon so if anyone can explain it to me it will be appreciated.

yes... a catBACK is exactly what it says CAT-BACK. lol... not trying to be a SA here. If your 8 is under 80k miles its still under the emissions warranty (trust me, just got mine replaced).

Yes a catback exhaust only replaces the exhaust after the cat converter hence cat-back. A midpipe is cheaper than buying a catback and cat. BHR makes a nice midpipe. http://blackhaloracing.com/products-...nated-midpipe/

thats nice but if you don't get the cat, won't it throw a constant CEL code?

Your exhaust system consists of three major components.

1. An exhaust manifold/header
2. A catalytic converter/resonator section. Referred to as the "Mid-Pipe"
3. An exhaust system with mufflers. Referred to as the "Cat-Back"

Now ask us the first question again please.

That's what I wanted to know too. I have to get emissions done this month so if I can get it passed with my clogged cat then idc about the cel. I'm thinking about getting the midpipe and maybe exhaust this month. What's a good cat/exhaust set-up?

Lol. I just want to get something cheaper then shelling out 1k+ on an oem cat. I was told to get a aftermarket exhaust by the dealership if I didn't want the oem cat. All the dealerships in milwaukee are giving me bs about everything so I'm just trying to find out from the people who actually know about the rx8.

Hi munn3yxiong,

I'm the guy selling the Random Tech cat with separate mid-pipe.

The link below shows a picture of an OEM mid-pipe/cat someone else was selling a few months ago. It is one solid unit that connects the exhaust headers to the dual mufflers.

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-parts-sale-wanted-44/fs-stock-cat-191564/

The kit I'm selling is a little different in that it replaces this solid unit with 2 pieces that bolt together. This allows an off-the-shelf proven-performance cat to be used with a separate mid-pipe and resonator. This mid-pipe also has a bigger bore than the OEM which improves flow.

Many of the performance mid-pipes available for the RX8 don't include a cat (or even resonator). My understanding is this is illegal in most states, and in some cases can be much louder than the OEM version (depends on what you want). New mid-pipes that include a cat are expensive. The mid-pipe/cat kit I'm selling has never been used and gives you a great combination of cost and performance while still being street legal. Also if use this kit and the cat eventually clogs again, it will be cheaper at that time to just replace the cat than the entire mid-pipe.

Hope this helps,
Darrell

Try this. It is the Agency power catback exhaust and it comes with a midpipe as well.
