If money is an issue you should not turbo an 8. If you blow the engine do you have $4,000 to spend on an new motor? You should spend the time ( I know lots of threads ) and read ALL the posts in the turbo stickies located at https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/

blem is justifying spending 8k as apposed to 2k on a performance upgrade. are you saying that if i put a greddy turbo on my car the engine is going to blow! all i want is to know what i should look out for while buying a used kit!

you can buy a used greddy for 2k, but you'll want to drop more cash on supporting mods, especially gauges. Then add in cost of install if you aren't doing it yourself.
Most people will drop 5-6k for a completed turbo setup

An improperly installed, poorly tuned, and novice (turbo wise) owner greatly increases the chances something will go wrong. You should be financially prepared to pay for a engine & install AFTER you have spent your 5-6K as Mysql101 mentioned. If you do not have the time to become an expert yourself do you have access to a local shop that has successfully done a Turbo RX-8? If the answer is no your taking a risk putting a turbo on your 8.

Knowing ahead of time the mods and extras needed to turbo a 8 try to find one being sold by someone who did the advised mods to their 8. Your chances of getting a good used turbo increase if the seller was a knowledgeable owner or had the install done by a knowledgeable shop. For example no matter how temping price wise you should avoid a bone stock Greddy kit done by a kid in is driveway. On the other hand should mysql part-out his turbo his stuff would be a great deal.
