Buying a used RX-8, questions.
Hey guys. Well I am looking into buy a used RX-8 and went and checked out this one guys this morning. I checked the oil on the dipstick and near the top there was evidence of moisture, a whiteish stuff, it was soft. What is this? Is it cause for concern?
Anyone have any things I should look for when buying a used RX-8? Also I got the VIN# of his car, what useful stuff can I do with this?

I've been seeing a lot of the white-ish stuff on my dipstick lately, but am not concerned with it because of the TSBs that have been linked to in this thread.
The VIN can be quite useful. You can buy a Carfax report that will tell you about the history of the car. It will tell you where/when the car has been registered and how many owners it has had. It will also tell you if the car has been reported as having been in a major accident. I emphasize reported because the info is only shown if it is known by Carfax. They collect info from a lot of places, so they're usually correct, but if for example a car was in an accident and the guy had it repaired by a buddy in a body shop "off the record", and didn't tell his insurance, then Carfax has no way of knowing. Still, this is a good source of info.
Another thing you can do is call Mazda. They can tell you when the car was registered, so that you can know when the warranty began. Also ask them if this car has ever been bought back as a lemon - I don't know for sure but I believe they are obligated to tell you if it has.
One last thing I recommend you check is new 2005 models. Both in the US and in Canada, it appears that there are still many unsold units that you could get a good deal on. Buying used is not a bad idea, but if new is only slightly more $$$, it may be worth it. At the very least, knowing what you can get a new one for could help with negotiations when buying a used one.
