Buyers Remorse Laws
#27
If you want a car that you will not regret. Get a Ferrari. Otherwise why did you buy the rx-8 in the first place? Pay peanuts, get monkeys. The 8 is already value for money.
Remorse laws? There should be a remorse law for the car dealer who sold the car to you.
Whacked the car till its 14mpg and still not satisfied. Luckily cheapos like this are few and far between.
Blame me for flaming. But this is downright irresponsible and socially-replusive.

I still say easy on the flameage (unless you're going to flame for insufficient detail up front). His last post cites his legs falling asleep on longer drives. I actually had a friend in college who found a similar problem with his Saturn SL-1 after having had it for 2 days. It was still under 500 miles so he took it back and ordered an SL-2. My buddy was just barely too tall for that car and a couple of test-drives simply cannot shake out every ergonomic detail (in Rob's case his head-room was fine, but he had to keep his legs slightly bent, even with the seat all the way back so he could never rest the backs of his legs on his seat - in hind-sight that should have been a *big* red flag).
Now, all that said, I still don't completely understand adeck20's point of view. My right leg rests on the consol just below the knee when I use the cruise control. It's not comfortable and I'm contemplating some different pad installations (don't like the MazdaSpeed one; perhaps I'll make my own). However, I love this car and I'd love driving it even if there was a sharp tack on my chair or an alarm klaxon that played through the speakers at random (oh, wait, that's the rpm buzz.... ;-)
adeck20 - the dealership might not take the car back outright, but they may help you change to another Mazda car they sell there. If I remember right it helps for the car to be under 500 miles.

With only 500 miles on your $28k car, you only have had a couple of tanks of gas in the thing. Why not give it some more time? I hardly hear of newer MT RX8s having mpg problems. And all this while keeping it below 4000 rpm?

My mileage sucked at first too. Now I get avg 20MPG and I don't baby it all the time.
As for the legs, lower the front of the seat down some, or raise the butt.

You're more than likely stuck with the car. I live in FL but for the most part dealerships in general don't want their cars back once they've left the nest.
Give the car a chance. It's a great car, and everyone that owns one is absolutely fanatical about them. Sure, the gas mileage is crappy, but it is something many of us accept because of the performance and styling. I had done a lot of research before buying mine, and was aware of the gas problem beforehand- but you never really know what 17mpg really is like until you live it. Also, be aware that this car requires a lot of oil maintenence because of the engine.
If you still don't want the car, and you bought it NEW, I think your only hope is selling it yourself. If you bought it used it probably hasn't depreciated much and you could probably take it and trade it in without a huge loss.
Next time you buy something for $30K you should probably read up on it.

Have you tried adjusting the power seat controls? Took me quite awhile to find a position that works for me (I'm 6'3", 175lbs). I ended up dropping the back and raising the front of the seat cushion, reclined a bit, and fiddled with the lumbar support until I found a comfortable position. Definitely give it some time. These are some of the most comfortable, ergonomic seats I've yet come across. Heck, I took a round trip to Florida this past spring (~18 hours either way), and not ONCE did I feel any kind of fatigue or soreness due to the seats. Hopefully you can figure it out!

Oh no... I guess I can understand, then, why you might have problems. I've hardly ever sat in my passenger seat, so I don't really know how comfortable they'd be after awhile.

On a 2400 mile(round trip)trip to Illinois a few months back I found the seats to be the most comfortable of any car I've ever owned. I drove straight through 18+ hours without as much as a cramp or leg fatigue. Ergonomically speaking, this car is aces. :D

I agree with the comfy seats sentiment.
But since you don't, it would be cheaper to either look for an aftermarket seat or perhaps buy some power ones from a membor or vendor here. They have more adjustments and you can probably get a pretty good deal on 'em.

I still don't get the whole mileage issue on this car. I have only 6k on my 8 and I average (almost to .X decimals) 18.4 MPG. I spend 75% of my time in stop and go freeway/street traffic. My old 1985 RX8 averaged about the same with only @105hp so I get the same mileage plus 130hp more. I checked the 350Z boards and sure enough, people are getting 18 to 20mpg average on their Z's. Some of them can get 27+ on freeway cruises but so can people here supposedly. If you're getting 13mpg then it's you and how you are driving. Unfortuneately, it sounds like you didn't really want the car to begin with or bought it on impulse. Salesman are good at what they do, always be careful.

I suggest you go sit in one with power seats and see if you can find a comfy spot. If so, find a wrecked one somehow and strip the driver's seat out. Don't take a bath on it yet, give it a try.

There is a thread somewhere on here where a guy put a pile of washers inbetween the seat and the floor to get a better angle while driving. If I remember correctly he was a good size guy and he found that fixed it.

Don't be so hasty to ditch the car. The mileage gets better. If you just spent $25+K on the car, then you shouldnt have any problem sucking it up for a few months while you put miles on it. Add the Racing Beat REVi intake if you wanna squeeze a few more miles out...but do this after you decide to keep the car.

Extraordinary Engineering
You can take the seat to a good welding shop and have the angle changed to suit you better. Maybe use the spacers for experimentation.
Hope you can eventually get along with the car because it is loads of fun!
