i am going to go pick up my 8 tomorrow and i was just wondering about the breakin procedure. i tried to search already. but yeah. got a 06 black on white gt. so happy!!! hope i dont get a lemon though...

 

The simplest answer is for the first 1000 miles don't go over 4k RPMs or maintain a constant speed for extended periods and no fast starts or sudden stops either. This is what is mentioned in the US manual but I do recall seeing a progressive chart for gradually increasing the RPMs somewhere in these forumns. (I think it came from the Japanese manual.)

Depends on which school of thought you subscribe to; there is everything from drive it hard right from the beginning to don't go above 4000 rpm for 1000 miles. The manual just says not to exceed 7000 rpm for the first 600 miles. There are tons of discussion about proper break-in, though from what I've seen nobody has ever had a car damaged because of improper break-in.

I did under 4000 rpms for the first 1500 miles, then under 6000 between 1500-1750 and then changed the oil at 1750 miles then redlined it after that.

thanks. damn the 8 is fun to drive. so hard not to go above 4000rpm on fun side roads. i hit 5000 like 3 times by accident already. =T

 

My feeling is don't sweat it, but I'm a bit of a proponent for the hard break-in (search that on google). People here that have used the hard break-in method have reported no problems.

 

yeah. i think im going to do under 4000rpm for first 600 miles. then increase to 6000 for the next 400. then just to 9000 for like a 100 miles.

does anyone here know how to adjust the stiffness or sensitiness of the gas pedal? i switch for a prelude and the gas on the 8 feels very loose to me.

 

I know the clutch is adjustable, but I doubt you can do anything to the gas pedal. However, Honda has it backwards in my opinion. I like my brake pedal rock hard and my gas soft while Hondas sometimes have a stiffer gas than brake.

 

If I remember reading correctly, the rx8 is a drive by wire with 2 sensors in the gas pedal
"no cable". I like the break in procedure too, "no constant speeds" as I live 350 miles straight up the pike to my house from the dealer, maybe I'll haffta take two lane backroads all the way home. WEEEEE

so hard not going at a constant speed for me. i go between 75 and 80 so i dont pass the 4000 mark.

 

Just dont take your car on a long trip and keep off the freeway. I went on a 40+ mile trip only to have my engine light come on

 

Really? I picked up my 8 on a Friday and then drove to B'ham, AL for a wedding and then drove back two days later back with no problems. (102 miles one way) It was a brand new 06 though so that may be an important difference.

What has pissed me off is seeing dealers prep a new 8 and run the **** out of it during the "test drive" then delivering it to the new owner telling them to "go easy on it the first 1500 miles"

 

I never understood the "don't drive at steady speed" bit for rotaries. For piston engines, varying the speed ensures that you'll breath the engine, which sucks a little oil to the rings and helps them break in. But the Wankel doesn't have any such action.

Or am I wrong about this for both piston and rotary engines?

Anyway, I varied my speed during the first 600 miles. Didn't start using cruise control until 601.

Well my car was not up to date with all her recalls so I think that was part of the prob.

 

yeah... my 8 has been a commute car the past week. drive about 90 miles one way. ive been driving between 60 and 80, never staying at the same speed too long. hopefully that is good enough. =T no problems so far except the freaking 15ish miles a gallon!!! makes me sad. =(
