Body Question
Does anyone have an idea of what the extra piece of body material is right in front of the rear wheel wells? I saw it on mine when I was going over it with the buffing cloth. I checked the other one down at the dealer, and it had them too. So what are they for, or why are they there? Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance,
Doug

When I took delivery last night I saw that and was told it is added protection from road debris. And although not as noticable I think there is another one running the length of the wheelbase below the doors. Seemed to feel a seam rubbing my fingers over the surface a little below the 'patch' you mentioned.

it's actually an underside spoiler, you see them a lot on performance cars...
they reduce drag by diverting air around the rotating wheels (big source of drag).
from pics of the pre-prod cars at the first Laguna Seca test day, all the RX-8's had them infront of both the front and rear wheels, IIRC.

Sorry Wakeech, but they are talking about something else. There is a clear plastic patch that is on the body in front of the wheel well (about 3" from the bottom) as well as along the bottom of the door sill (but not along the side edge ). It is very obvious on the silver. I thought the guys who prepped the car for the showroom made a mistake but it's stuck "real good".
This is like the 3M bra product that you put on the front of the car for chip protect ion from flying rocks. But why put it there but not on the front of the car and along the trailing edge of the doors. Those are the most likely to get chips.
There is another thread about the same thing.

Yup, Mac is right. That's the area we're talking about, so any ideas?
Is that spot really at much higher risk for getting dinged, or is there some other reason?

I saw that strip when i picked mine up and i thought they forgot to take that piece off. I don't like it and i wish you could take it off without causing damage to the paint

If it is 3M's product, then applying 158 deg of heat will allow you to peel it off. Personally I will leave it on for at least a year to see if it gets any dings, if not then off it comes. BTW I will be putting on the the 3M on the front of the car.
