Blew off the fuel pump line

Blew off the fuel pump line
Hello all.
Apparently when I put the line to the fuel pump on my friend's 2004 back on and put the little green clip on the line, it did not seat all the way. On the second trip he made after we put it back together, the line blew off the pump, and the clip has had it.
How do you make sure that line is seated correcty? Also, I need a new fuel line clip; is that a dealer only part?
Sorry about the newb questions...I just started messing with RX-8s recently for fun.

A guy just blew up his rx8 like 3 weeks ago when this happened.
Fuel line popped off while driving, sprayed fuel on a hot surface, ignited, burned to nothing.
Don't dick with your fuel system. Much less a friend's. espically if you can't figure out quick connects.

First, why did you pull it off ? for fun ?
You'll need new clips and sealant.
Yes u need to order them thru dealerships.
obviously u dont know how to fix it, so bring the car to the shop and tell them to fix it.
If u want ur friend to live, stop acting like a smartass & stop playing with his fuel line.

I am not some teenager you need to parent. If you have the information I asked about, please let me know. Otherwise, I would appreciate it if you would keep your lectures to yourselves. Obviously I am concerned about safety, and we parked the car until this issue is resolved. Hence my question. I searched all over this forum and no one has posted anything about that clip, even though many people have swapped their pumps. That connection is not spring loaded, so the clip must be the only thing holding it onto the pump; so I need a new one.
So again, I ask you to kindly share the information or don't post in my thread.

I'll take that under advisement.
With all due respect, I would appreciate answers to my question, and less righteous indignation. Your quick connects are not like the domestic or german versions I am familiar with, and every type is different. When the hose snapped back on and the clip went back on, it looked like it was seated. I pulled on it and everything was good. We started it up and it ran.

Did you put the quick connect on backwards?
For the little green basket inside the thing, did you put it on so that it doesn't contact the quick connect?
You should be able to find them at autoparts stores, if not then ask the dealership its probably an item they have a few of laying around.

Thank you. I am going to look for one over lunch.
It is possible I put the green clip on in reverse, though I am fairly certain the tab was pointing to the rear of the car, and that is how I put it back.

Could be just a faulty connector, **** happens.
Quit with your attitude. You're a newb, who just posted asking for help after doing something not quite well thought through and having no idea, while doing it to someone else's vehicle, and endangering your lives. Off course you'll get crap for it!
This is a forum, not a manufacturer Q&A. Live with it

Unfortunately, the vinyl fuel line is heat-shrunk(shrinked?) to the connector so you would need to order a whole new fuel line. What I don't get is the "green" connector. I only remember reds and blues.

It would have been completely obvious to me if I had mangled a heat shrunk connection, but it was a green clip that fit into/around the basket on the end of the vinyl hose. A parts specialist at a local dealer went out into his service bay and came back with a small clear clip and a red clip - and said they were emissions line lockers/connectors and were similar but not a replacement for what I needed. The red emissions one was close, but the ID was too big.
I think the clip may be built into the line, and I will have to replace the line - which is fine - but you would think it would be a bit more apparent or widely known.

Quick Update
Ok I don't have my pics uploaded yet but I can tell you that the green clip (and it is green) had to have been on backwards - one way, the center holding section is tapered and one way is flat, and yes it matters which way it goes. Of course, it will go on either way, but it will only hold pump pressure one way. You will get full engagement either way, but with enough power, you can pull the line off if it is on backwards, which I tested.
I will post the pics so you can see the difference once I get them off my camera. For those who aren't familiar with the 2004+ connectors, they are color coded and of various size depending on the hose they retain. They are not sold by themselves from a Mazda dealer. However, it is in fact a Ford part, and the Ford dealer lists them individually - for $50 a clip. They engage to a basket inserted in the hose receptacle, which is likewise listed individually at Ford dealers, if you happen to need one.
It seems these are pretty new, so the aftermarket has yet to catch up. I expect these to be in Help! sections eventually. A guy at a Mazda shop pulled a green clip off a Mazda 6, and it was the same clip.

The guy at the Mazda indie shop said he thought 2004 was the first year for them in RX8. They share bins but not well enough to sell them from both brand dealerships. If you go look for them at Mazda, you will not find them. I'm just trying to help anyone who needs one in the future.
