About 1/2 a can. Pump it in hot and turn the motor over by hand.
Vlad is right - the smoke is not only thick, its disgusting and caustic.
Probably exactly what you want when cleaning a motor.

Good luck dudes---i have pulled my engine from the top and Ray has too--little advice--get everything off the engine you can before the pull---you cant pull it with the engine mounts on, cuss out the a/c unit as it IS going to get in the way.
You do know you cannot pull it with the trans attached? SO go ahead and get it on a stand. While you are at is replace the pilot bearing/seal (it is one bitch to get out---had to drill mine out with a dremel--even with a good puller couldnt get it out) and throughout bearing, regrease the clutch coller, etc, etc,
take the oil hoses off from the engine side not the cooler side, replace the omp gasket and put just a little rv silicone gasket sealant behind/front of it and you will not have any more omp blowing oil out probs, mark the front pulleys/eccentric plate so lining them up on install will be trouble free(do same thing with driveshaft and wrap that bad boy in bubble wrap or something and put it someplace SAFE).Jack it up as high as you can. Mark ALL the connector from the engine harness as you disconnect them--you will be glad you did. test your fuel injectors while they are out--they can be out of balance/drippings etc mine were-- mark them so they return to the same place on install! . You also will need the little copper washers for your oil injectors when it is time to replace them. Dont forget to lube the lower intake and the secondaty valves. Since you are catless? take that damn secondary air pump off and plate the hole it leaves in the exhaust header. Make 2nd exhaust heat shield to further protect that lower intake for it's temps. The battery box has to come out. Protect the electricil power steering so when the engine comes free and swings forward it does not srike it. Go ahead and replace radiator hoses while you are at it. You also may want to speck your clutch to see if you want to replace now or later.
that is all---------for now:)

^ Know anybody that makes the secondary air pump flange cover on the manifold?

tdiddy 03-14-2008 09:41 AM

OD - Good information but you do realize that Vlad has a turbo car and that they are trying to do this entire pull-rebuild-install in one weekend, right? That means at least half of what you just wrote is not applicable to this situation.

olddragger 03-14-2008 09:49 AM

na--just make one yourself-- not hard --i just used some exhaust heat wrap and piece of steel.
I know they want to do it fast--but when you do this much work--dont cut corners--only means trouble down the road. Realize he cant get injectors done in time but all the other stuff is directly applicable.
If you do remove the secondary air pump the fuel pump resistor is part of it Dont forget to put that back!

I imagine so. Probably going to have to do this somewhere out in the ozarks so the neighbors don't whine. I assume to turn it by hand you just put it in gear and spin the rear wheels. Once the foam is in and it's sat for a while, do you just fire it up? Should I remove my cat/mufflers first?

rotorocks 03-14-2008 11:34 PM

I am drunk, Ray is here sitting in his jammies.

we worked real hard on the engine so go ahead, laugh all you want...

here are the pics of the seals and the engine parts, and Ray ( in his jammies) :)

I need to review the service manual to find that part. I have not ventured much on that side of the engine.

:uhh:
