Question bad to mix oil?

Hey guys, i just recently joined this site but have been searching here for a long time. anyways i have searched for a question to this but could not find a simple answer. i bought my rx8 about 6-7 weeks ago. im constantly checking the oil level and its finally starting to get a bit lower (i checked while filling up with gas) i dont know what the dealership put in oil wise, synthetic or normal. so my question is, would it be bad to put 5w-20 NORMAL oil in even if the dealer put in synthetic? im sticking to 5w-20 just to keep things simple.

also side question. should i check the oil after the car has been sitting for a long time or right after a drive. i know right after a drive will show less oil because it still has not drained into the oil pan all the way. but im just wondering. i promise i searched, i know this topic has probably been beat to death, but im just looking to take care of my car. thanks guys!

there is no way in hell you did a search for "mix oil" hell just the similar threads at the bottom of this page has 3 threads with that in the title.

second- get a manual and read it.

ok maybe you didnt look because the bottom of the page has one thread about oil and thats asking what weight oil should be used (not my question) and the other has to do with sludge build up. not even remotely close to my question. and go ahead and search "mix oil" the first page has nothing to do with the topic other then a synthetic sticky on which weight oil is prefered and if our cars are capable of running synthetic, which we all know they can. other than that the only thing with "oil" in the topic name is MY THREAD! i didnt join this site to be a turd, but i dont appreciate people accusing me of being ignorant. all i wanted was a simple answer.

and second, a manual will not tell you if you can combine synthetic with normal oil

the second answer was to your second question
also side question. should i check the oil after the car has been sitting for a long time or right after a drive.

You can download a pdf version, for free, from mazdausa.com. It answers your questions.

Lol i say we add a mod to the forum that as soon as you type in the words "can i" and "oil" in the title a big box pops up and says "THIS BETTER NOT BE ANOTHER GOD DAMN OIL THREAD"

^ lol i understand, i was on a previous forum where one topic never seemed to be answered. but like i said i searched and the search function brought up absolutely nothing similar to what i was asking and i searched for about 3 1/2 pages. my question was not indepth and it probably took less time to just answer it then it did proving other people points that the answer exists somewhere in the depths of the forum. but regardless thank you to the people who helped

Ok well at the mercy of not pissing you off, provide the following: what year is your car? how many miles is your car? dealer purchase? private purchase? How many previous owners? Was it a dealer transfer, or is the dealer that sold it the same dealer that serviced it?

I ask this because:

It is generally ok and somewhat recommended to go back to stock weights (aka 5w-20) however many of us here actually bump it up to a 5w-30 (castrol gtx, or pennzoil yellow are popular here) since the 20's are a tad bit too light (and only in the US is 20 recommended for emissions, elsewhere its recommended to use 30). This keeps you pretty much at what mazda recommends just to get you going. The discussion of can you step to synthetic or 10w-xx can happen another time.

As far as changing oil goes, it is best to check on a "warm" engine. Not cold, not hot, but warm. If you check when it is hot, chances are you are going to get a low reading since the oil is thin and against the walls of the pan and lines and such. When the engine is cold you are going to get a somewhat higher rating because the oil is thicker and has settled. On a warm engine you can get a pretty efficient reading. Check the oil after every 2 - 3 gas fills to ensure you are maintaining level

When in doubt, ask the dealer for service history. If you purchased it from them, they should be able to provide one.

hmm, friendly community i see. apparently people have lost the ability to read. i DID search and it brought up nothing of use but im not going to repeat myself.

anyways, paimom.soror, the car is a 2005 with 52.xxx miles (NOW) bought it from the same dealer that it was originally sold from and that it was serviced at, all records have been provided. car has had all factory mantainence done and has always had 5w-20 run through it. (one owner) i plan on switching it up every oil change or so to 5w-30 and back.

i have always tested the oil about 1- 1 1/2 hours after driving as i did with my last car while the oil/engine was still warm, and like you said, not hot nor cold. i knew this to be a common fact amongst most cars, i just didnt know for sure about the rotary as im still learning. i just capped it off with a qt of castrol gtx to hold it off till i get my first oil change, i bought the car with 50,000 miles on it so im getting close. after that im probably just going to stick to mobil 1, which is what i have always used. (ATV, Snowmobile, Dirt bike, previous cars) so i have found no reason to switch.

i plan on eventually turning this car into a project car at the start of next spring and either buying the greddy turbo kit or making one of my own as i have freinds who own there own shop. i may just stick with a prebuilt kit as im not sure i want to bother with the fabrication.

but to those who have halped i say thank you.

I wouldn't switch back and forth from 5w-30 and 20, there really is no benefit in doing this. Just stick with one weight (preferably 30).

Chances are that the dealer has used dino oil in your car, and I would recommend sticking with the same. There is a ton of debates on dino vs synthetic, and while you are still in the learning phase on rotary engines, I would stick with dino. Some people do indeed use synthetic without issue, but again, I would check out articles like this before you do. (btw, i would stay away from M1 and rotaries)

Good luck, turbo'ing a renesis is not an easy job, nor is it inexpensive. There are a bunch of guys who have had experience here, check out the forums for some tips.
