Consistently when driving my 8 up a long hill with cruise control on, speed set at 80 kph (50 mph) in fourth gear auto, the engine speed increases about 500 rpm to give the feeling that the transmission has changed down a gear. I assume this is the torque converter lock-up disengaging and slippage in the torque converter. If so, why doesn't the system simply tell the auto transmission to change down a gear? It seems to do so very easily in other circumstances.

Does this mean we can claim a continuously variable speed transmission? :D
