Thanks Jon! I really appreciate the picture!

I'm not that mechanically inclined, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can here from people like yourself.

Another question...what is the easiest way to get to it?

Thanks Jon

Easy... jack up the driver's side and put a jack stand under there for safety.
The starter has two bolts (one has a nut on the other side).

Also, disconnect the battery because the starter has constant voltage running to it.

Pretty much... you'll laugh at how simple it is.

Is the starter located before or after the engine tray? That is the black lip at the front that has the rotary emblem on it and then the tray it's attached to.

The starter is located on the transmission, very close to the flywheel where it grips to start your car

In the pic I posted above I'm laying at the middle of the car, facing forward, on the driver's side.
Just jack up the driver's side and crawl under where your door is... you can't miss it.

May I suggest that you look into purchasing a factory service manual. They are a wonderful picture and exploded drawing source and have lots of fantastic information. You'll find yourself referring to it more often than not when you perform simple service on your car.

Available from any Mazda dealer.

I have this already although I got it on ebay and it's a pile of PDF files on a CD. Never got around to printing them off!

even though Jon has this pretty well taken care, I had been meaning to make a DIY for this project, took pics and everything.

This thread inspired me to do this.

So, here is semi complete DIY on starter swaps:
