Another oil change post....

Hit 600 miles so I changed the wife's blood in the 8 for the first time. Used Castrol 5w-20 and a Purolator PureOne PL14610. Going to do this again at 1500 miles, 3000 miles, and then stay on a 3000 mile oil change cycle.

All went great except for I forgot to get a filter remover adapter. So went and got one. *Here's a tip* Tap it down on the filter with light taps using a hammer. It didn't even attempt to slip before breaking the filter loose. Mine came easy compared to the horror stories I read about on here.

Only question I have is.... The manual says the oil capacity is 3.7 qt with a filter change, but I keep reading on here that people say you only do a half oil change because of the oil coolers and what not. (That would put the capacity at 7.4 quarts if it really is a 1/2 oil change) I put a total of 3 3/4 quarts back in. That put it just a smidge below the full mark after a quick drive. So, where are you all coming up with this theory that you are only doing a half oil change?

Cool Coolers.....

The US spec '8 has two huge oil coolers at the front corners, and yards of hose to get it there.

Capacity of the whole system is about 8 quarts. That's what the manual says, and that is what the dealer put in at my first oil change!......it overflows into the air filter box! The filter weighed about 4 pounds, and they had to order me a new one.

There is no way (yet) of draining the coolers, but 4 qts of fresh every 3k should be great.

Why did you change the oil at just 600 miles. Maybe I need a lesson on first time oil changes. I was going to wait till about 2500
,I just hit 600 miles.
Why?

What manual says 8 quarts?

The 2004 RX-8 Workshop Manual I saw said 7.1 US quarts for MT and 6.1 US quarts for AT. Oil w/filter change capacity for both is 3.7 US quarts.

Cool Jeez....

Alright already, yes, the shop manual says 7.1 quarts total!

You are kind of missing the point, the techs go by the factory manual, where page 32 tells them 7.1 jugs......

Either way, 7.1, 8, whatever, THEY DON"T FIT.

It's 3.5qt without a filter, and 3.7qt with.

Oh, excuse me! You're one of those "whatever" types like the mechanic that said "whatever 3.7, 7.1, 8 quarts" when your car was over-filled!

Last time I checked 7.1 was almost 7, not almost 8, but oh, whatever!

Now go get some sleep would ya'.

It was just my preference. I look at the Rotary engine being a work of art. If a company recommends a strict break in period of XXXX many miles with varying rpms before you give it heck, why not change the oil at the end of the break in period? Waste of time and money? Maybe. Better piece of mind to self? Definitely. Besides, it's cheap. Costed me all of $12.
