Unhappy Air Pump Noise?

On a cold start up, I hear an extremely loud squeal--a very high pitch "chattering" noise that lasts around 20 seconds. I am almost 100% positive that it is my air pump, not a belt or anything else. I searched and most seemed to say that the air pump is failing...

Should I just drop off the car and specifically say that they need to wait for the engine to become cold? I am wondering because if they do not find any problems I will have to pay for the rental they provide.

Any advice would be appreciated!

The dealership I normally go to waits till the next day to check my car out, and both times after they told me that there was nothing wrong with my transmission, even though it constantly grinds in 5th gear , I didn't have to pay for the rental.

Hope that helps

I am afraid that they will simply state that the loud noise is "normal." Has anyone had their air pump replaced from a dealer (they did not buy the car from) due to noise?

i've heard the loud screech also in the morning. but, after the latest flashes & over time it just stopped doing it... no explanation really since the flashes didn't touch this subject. but, i do remember it was annoying!

I've had the same problem, mine sounded like a dust buster on crack. Its not normal and the dealer replaced mine with out a hitch. Its very easy to replace if you find a used one.

havent seen a bad air pump yet, but its very simple to diagnose, unplug it, and start it cold if the noise is gone, there ya go.

I may be mistaken but the emissions warranty is for 100k miles on the 8......is that pump not part of the emissions?

The emissions warrenty should be to 100,000 miles and it SHOULD be covered under that.

Yep, ^ they are right. The air pump is part of emissions--go now before you hit 100k.

I have the same issue. My secondary air injection pump is bad. Morrie's Mazda in Minneapolis is denying warranty coverage claiming emissions is only to 80K miles and does not cover the pump. It does sound like this is a common a recurring problem though - especially at higher miles- as my car has 72K miles on it
