Angry AC/Heat & Stereo Controls not working!

04, 6spd gt, single disc bose stereo, 38k miles, no head unit modifications, never even had the dash panel off.

Everything worked fine the night before, nothing weird happend, didn't hit any bad bumps or anything. It was cold overnight, about 2 degrees F'
I start it up the next day about 25 degrees out, and let the engine run a little before turning on the defroster as usual, except now none of the controls work except for the fan speed and temperature. Then I notice the stereo buttons don't work except volume and eject button. The stereo will play the cd i put in, but I can't skip tracks or adjust bass/treble. The buttons on the steering wheel don't work anymore either.

First thing, I checked all fuses- All good (Metered not Eyeballed)
Second, Disconnected battery thinking a reset would help, NO GO
3rd, Read some discussion in these boards of people having similar problems after undergoing modifications to the dash/head unit, which I haven't done. But still I checked to make sure the faceplate was secure and tried pushing slightly in the corners of the cd player/dash like some suggest the connector being loose. Doesn't seem to be my issue. I don't have a garage so I've been putting off tearing out the dash and unit to check all connections, I'm hoping somebody found a simple cause for this before I go through all that. Essentially any solution other than buying a new unit would be a weight off my shoulders.

Thanks for any help you can offer

UPDATE: So after sitting for 2 days I went out to start the car just to let it run a bit, and sure enough the controls were ALL working fine... So I thought okay maybe it was something strange that went away. I left the car running, went inside to grab a few things, about 3 minutes later I get in the car, and I'm back to square one. Same situation as before same exact controls malfunctioning. So it's intermitant apparently...

Again, I'm in the dark. Can anybody help?

Maybe this can help you... It's from my 2004 Rx-8 Wiring Diagram. (Sorry I don't have the audio section scanned yet.)

Good Luck

Well it's not helping me much yet...But I'm sure this will shed some light on things once I dive into the dash and start hunting. Thanks for posting those, and if you happen to get the audio section scanned that would be awesome too.

then obviously something is loose in the back.

cuz there are 3 connectors in the back of the HVAC controls. so just take them apart, and put them back together see if it solves it.

There are also many threads dealing with this.

A simple search might turn up what you are looking for.

I believe a lot of times it turns out to be the solder connections on the back but I could be wrong.

One must search...................go to the DIY section and then search "heater repair".

Thanks for throwing in your two cents, but if you read my post, you'll learn that I have certainly searched, pointing out that the other threads regarding similar problems are presented after making radio modifications.

Further more, I also read enough through the search results to learn that the "Solder Connections" you speak of are regarding the problem with the temp **** not funtioning... As you can read in my original post, this is one of my only controls that still works perfectly fine.

So rather than telling me to search the forums (which ive been doing for 7 days) perhaps you can read the full post before throwing out useless replies.

there was a member here who sold his car cuz one day his radio and stuff stopped working and afraid that there will be more and more problems with the car, he sold it right away, but then the dealership *found out* that its just a loose connector in the back. lol

so yea, check it.

I hear ya, I'm going to take the dash out today. I just can't seem to tie in the HVAC controls with the stereo controls... They both presented the problem for the first time at the same time, they other day the problem cleared on both, then the problem came back on both...

I've read that there's a screw in the back of the unit that may need to be tighter/looser which seems to be an issue for people who have made modifications. I'm just wondering if this would effect HVAC and AUDIO as well as the controls on the steering wheel....?

HA! Yeah I'm not about to sell my car. But so far it seems to be most likely a loose connection somewhere (hoping..) I'll post my results before the day's end.
Thanks. A loose connection would be awesome!

Okay, so I tore out the HVAC/Stereo unit, obviously I had to disconnect everything, then reconnected. I fired it up and everything is in normal working order right now.
I'm currently waiting for her to warm up and I'm going to take her for a test drive, hit some bumps n such, and hopefully all's well.
I'm trying not to give my hopes up just yet, knowing the problem has gone away briefly once before.

Cross your fingers!

Okay, well I put about 20 miles on it today, so far all controls are fully operational.
Hope that'll be good enough.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I know this could be a few different things, but, here's what happened to me.

And my apologies for this second resurrection of an old post. But i was suffering from this issue as well. My Radio, Logicon, HVAC controls where NOT working all of a sudden.

After reading a little bit and getting a very useful Youtube video on how to pull the radio out and check it i found what was wrong in my case. Pleas forgive me i do not have pics of this so i'll be detailed:

1. Pulled the radio out just like these 2 videos explain, now these are not related to these problems, these ONLY take you through the CORRECT way to remove the radio, which in my case, someone tried to remove it incorrectly, thus ripping the face off its mounting screws and making the 2 contact strips on the sides of it that connect the face to the radio body it self not making proper contact and as such everything shuts off:

2. Once i had the radio out and figured this out, i initially massaged the face back on, reconnected it and it was working.

3. So, took the whole radio out, took off the face, epoxied the brass screw threads back into the face and put them all back in.

4. Mounted the radio back in after the epoxy dried and voila! All is well everything works perfect again.

5. Also, when i pulled out my radio i noticed that the 10mm bolt that holds it in place in the back was also not in so who ever took that out did a **** poor job and as such it was just a matter of time before it was going to stop working.

Hope that helps anyone on here.
