6MT Engine Tear down Results (Reman w/85.2k Miles)

Car: 2004 Mazda RX-8 6MT
Prod. Date: August 2003
Engine: #3

These will be the internals that came out of my Mazda Reman. The Reman went in sometime 2006 at 16.8k & pulled at 102k so about 85k miles and about 4 other owners.... so this poor thing was abused before me! There is no consistent report of oil changes or any maintenance etc. Coils/plugs were done at about 100k and have proof but besides that. No clue. Enjoy the pictures!!

E-Shaft: This rear rotor bearing, came out of the rotor and i think it friction welded itself to the shaft.

Note: I bought it at 100,716 Miles. Carfax just hasn't updated when the report was run.

Yikes. It's unfortunate we don't know the oil type and change history. Need more autopsies like this, but with patient histories.

I secretly can't wait for my engine to go. I got to tear down my last Mazda reman and this one was turbocharged from day one and now has right at 40,000 miles on it.

You're currently on your PR build correct? You probably still have a while before you have to worry about that.. Lets hope!

Note: Just updated carfax, i mean it doesn't provide much in terms of OCI of maintenance details after the second owner but i thought it would provide insight into what the car's been through. The owners were on top of big issues like the engine, re-programming, tail lights, etc. Then when i got it, it was in TERRIBLE condition but being one of my dream cars, it was a plus that i got to "restore" her!

Yeah, compression is still solid as of 6 months ago. Of course that can change from one day to the next. If I make it to 50,000 miles on it (40,000 now) I will be happy. This engine has been boosted since day one and dealt with some half assed tuning for the first 10,000.00 miles. But really any boosted Renesis making it to 50,000 miles is great.

Scotland, CT is the town next to where my parents live, it's funny I never remember seeing a red 8 in the area.

Does anyone know how the corner piece of the apex seal behaves once it passes over an area of the housing where chrome flaking is present? Can it catch on the tiny groove created by the chrome flaking and get stuck?

Easy. Just don't change the oil for 8,000 miles, don't check oil level every other fill-up and never rev it above 5K. Oh yeah, and drive it hard a mere seconds after starting it up in the morning. In other words, be a typical owner. Then find your way to this forum and complain about the horrible reliability of the Renesis engine.

Or maybe I should just be like you and only drive it 2000 miles a year for the next ten years and then claim it's the most reliable engine ever.

We've been through this before, clearly you just don't get it. 38K trouble-free miles is 38K trouble-free miles, regardless of how long it takes. Though I have been told, by many, that it would be better for the engine if driven more frequently. Except... how do you top... zero problems??

Oh I get it, you think 38,000 miles over 10+ years without any issues is something special in terms of reliability. It's not.
