Does this still occur after you turn the engine off and back on?
If not, then you probably just needed to let it warm up.
If it still occurs, might be a clogged cat or the oil metering pump.
If your car is under warranty take it to the dealer.

More useful information to include:
Have you had all your recalls performed?
Have you had your spark plugs replaced?
How many miles are on the car?
Does your CEL illuminate? If so, what is the code?

I have gone to the mazda dealer in town. They did a recall on the powertain control module. They said they reprogrammed it. I also got all my spark plugs replaced. My car has 93000 miles. The person that had it before me hollowed out the cat, so my car reads emissions. Could that be part of the problem?

Could be the water temp sensor - that would put a 3500 rev limit on......

Still waiting to hear if you got a CEL or not when this happened. If so, what is the code it generates? This will help us to narrow down the possibilities.

Today I went to a couple shops in town and all that came up was o2 sensors needing to be replaced.

yes. That is how I would get it out of "limp mode" but it goes right back in after a few minutes.

If you had a bad O2 sensor a CEL should have came on.
I still have yet to hear an answer on if you receive a CEL when it goes into limp-mode and if so, what code does it generate. If you feel that its a bad O2 sensor, replace it. If it doesn't work, then come back and we'll go from there.
