$700 "tune up"
Just called my dealer and scheduled a 30,000 mile service. When i asked for an what the service would cost that told me $700. I then asked just what they would be doing to my car. "Oil change, radiator flush, rotate tires, and a tune up."
I then asked what was involved in a tune up, and the service department manager said that they would replace all of the spark plugs because it states in the owners manual that they should be changed every 30K miles. (don't remember reading that part) I promptly told him that i was no longer interested in a service.

you can buy rx7 plugs for $6.50 a pop. Or you can get rx-8 plugs at ~$18 each.
it takes 15 mins to change them.
Dealers should only be visited for warranty work. Not maintenance.

30K tune-up here in Seattle and around Seattle area is $450 - $550 Depending on which dealer you go to.
I have about 43K on my car and I skipped my 30K. Cuz of a few reasons..
1) My tires get checked and get rotated (if necesary) for free everytime I go in for routine oil change ( $35) at my dealer.
2) Got new spark plugs, new starter, new battery while getting my intake manifold replaced at about 32K (everything covered under warranty).
3) The radiator got flushed and refilled at local lube center for only $55.

Guess i will have to do it myself. Think i have seen plugs for around $20 a pop. $80 is much friendlier on the wallet than $700.

o and...I recently got my transmission fluid and rear differential fluid changed at the dealer for $90 + tax. Yea yea.....that's right. I waited til 42K to change those...lol whatever..
So if your dealer tries to charge you more than that...just do it yourself...lol
For me I didn't have time or necessary tools to do it..and it was only 90 bucks..
But I'm so glad I did it.....cuz Chaning gear now is so smooth and buttery....and that lil hamming static noise disappeared..... It'll probably come back later on...but now it's just so quiet and smooth... I love my car!

Cost less?
I just called the Mazda dealer in Louisville and to do the same 30,000 mile service is $500, which is still a lot, but much less than your dealership's $700.
