faster? 04 or 06

Me and my co-worker will be racing this weekend at the race track here in orlando. I have an 04 GT stock no mods with 26,000 miles while my friend has an 06 sports with 10,000 miles stock too. Will I win the 1/4 miles considering he has a higher hp and 6 speed?

Are you both AT's?. I would say the '06 has a bit of a chance of WHOOOOOPING you!

both auto but dont you think i will have the slight edge because of the gear ratio coz what i know is that 4at will only need to shift to 2nd gear to reach the quarter mile while my friend 6at will shift up to 3rd gear to reach the same 1/4????

if the 4speed auto was faster they wouldn't have created a 6speed auto for the car.

Yes, and 6 gears (with a 6-port engine) utilizes the power band more, you'll be high in 2nd gear but past peak power, and you'll spend a lot of time in 2nd gear without the torque you need.

Save up for a supercharger?

your disadvantages:

gear ratio (exactly what raptor said)
power (197 vs 212)
weight (since you have GT and he has sport)

I have an 06 Auto GT and have raced a 4 port auto on the street. From stoplight to about 65ish I had him beat by about half a car length... I think I could've pulled away since I was only at about 4k rpm in 3rd and I assume he was still in high 2nd... I'd love to hear the results of your race though.

I agree. That and if your friend knows how to use a clutch for launching applications, double-clutching alone will give him an edge over you. Ever try to learn how to drive a manual? Have you ever made it "jerk" on accident? Well if your buddy knows how to make it lunge like that on purpose off the line and in every gear...you're toast.

Double-clutching is usually only used in endurance racing and driving heavy diesel machinery. You will gain nothing by double-clutching in a dash.

Okay, so maybe I used the wrong term. Double-clutching is for making the lunging effect smoother rather than more abrupt. What I was trying to describe would then be the opposite of double-clutching. That is, releasing the clutch abruptly so as to make the car lunge forward faster. This lunge is faster and more advantegeous than just stomping on the gas in an AT. Aside from me using the wrong word, is there a personal problem you have with me, CJKIM? Did I beat you up in grade-school, take your g/f, or something?

Go look up almost any car forum and I guarantee you anytime someone says something along the lines of "double clutching is faster", they will definitely make a connection to F&F.
Don't you find it somewhat funny that even you have been "brain-washed" into thinking that double clutching is faster after a really bad actor said it?
I'm assuming you're describing power shifting... in which case I hope no one in an 8 ever does.
and no, I just like to put quotes that I find funny in my sig.

The 6AT by half a car's length is about right as someone pointed out earlier. However, these slushboxes are rather moody. On occasion, I could swear I can accelerate faster and on other times, it responds like a turtle. Also, driving skills play a huge part in the performance on track. Since the difference between the two ATs are not that great, it all goes down to the driver's skills. Polish up your skills on the track (take a professional driving course or lesson) and that the little 15HP gain on the 6AT means nothing.

It is a pity that Mazda has never truly invested a suitable and genuine clutchless "tiptronic" transmission, instead of the piece of crap that goes in the 4AT and even the 6AT. Even though, MTs are a lot more fun to drive, I have been so used to the auto that I wouldn't mind seeing a significant investment in this area (hence our need for this forum). In North America these days, the AT transmission seems to be the way of the future. More and more cars getting better ATs these days and they perform very well, especially a genuine clutchless set-up- not an imitation box with fancy paddle shifters. Take for example the 911 Turbo- the tiptronic version is faster in acceleration times and Porsche has the stats to prove it. I have already saved up a considerable sum, and will be taking the plunge in a year or two and get a 997 Turbo (tiptronic of course) and those MT folks who consistently like dissing the underdog ATs will be going reverse in slow motion as I peddle to the meddle!

Have you tested this? I don't own an auto but I'd be curious what times they're putting out. I doubt its half a car length. Remember, it's not just "15 hp".

well i drive a 4AT and i'll take on any 6AT that wants to go test this out. My car is completely stock and has a stereo in the back, so it's heavier 2. I'm expecting to lose the race, i would just like to know for myself how they compare. I'm around Toronto, so let me know.

the 06 automatic has the exact same engine as all the manual rx8's (6port), However, the auto cant take anything over 7500rpm so its rated lower at 212 becuase peak hp is made higher up on the 6port engine.
